Engagement Ring Dilemma

My favourite grandma died when I was 16 and I was given her engagement and wedding rings at that time, as well as her mother's (my great grandmother) engagement ring. I never knew my great grandmother.

I'm getting married in September and have always thought I'd use my grandma's ring to be commissioned into a ring that me and OH would design, and we've been discussing this with a family friend who is a jeweller.

The diamond from my great grandmother's ring is an "old cut" which means it was cut by hand and is totally unique. The diamond from my grandma's ring is actually a replacement stone as it would seem the original was lost at some point and is a modern cut diamond.

My dilemma is which diamond to use for my ring?! The ring that isnt used for my engagement ring will be passed down to my daughter (9 weeks old ;)).

The old diamond is obviously special because its so old and different, the new diamond is special because it was my grandma's. Passing down the older ring keeps it as a family "heirloom", passing down the newer ring is special because my daughter will get my lovely grandma's ring.....

I know only I can decide really, but I'm interested to see what other people might do in my position!!

  • I'd probably choose the grandma's ring, as it'd be the one most special to you since it belonged to somebody you loved so it will hold the most sentimental value, which to me would be more important than the uniqueness of the other diamond. :)
  • Just being a devils advocate here but what if you had another daughter in the future?

Personally I wouldn't use either ring but wear them as the rings that they were originally given to me as

Personally, I'd keep your grandma's ring intact to pass on to your daughter and use the other diamond for your own ring. For me the sentimental value is in the whole ring but that's just me and I'm sure whichever one you choose will make a beautiful and special ring!
  • Create a design with 2 diamonds?
  • I'd keep the old cut diamond in its old setting. And use the modern cut diamond in your modern setting.

I love old fashioned jewellery and that would be such a beautiful thing to keep.

    That ^^^^^^

Also, as someone else said, what if you have another daughter?

Won't both rings get passed on down your family anyway?
  • Hmm, hadn't thought about having another daughter... Hmm.

I wouldn't wear the rings as they are; just not my style at all... And the design we've gone for only really has use for one diamond.

But yes, I guess eventually one of the existing rings plus my engagement ring will be passed down... I suppose it's more about what ring to pull apart and what one to keep whole. And the one kept whole will probably sit in a box in a drawer until I die and my baby gets it :(

And she can show your granddaughter a ring that her great great great grandmother passed down the family for over a hundred years, a ring where the owner sat looking at her beloved baby daughter - your grandmother - and thought 'one day, my baby will have this part of me, and one day, so will her baby or her baby's baby......'.

I've got my Nan's ring that she gave me on my 21st birthday because she wanted to see my wearing it while she was still alive. It caused a lot of grief because as eldest daughter my mum had assumed it would go to her.

I intend to carry on the tradition (in many, many years) and pass the ring on to my eldest granddaughter on her 21st. As I haven't got grandchildren yet I might have to rethink my plan but for the timebeing that's who'll get the ring!
