Electric Meter Replacement

We've just had a letter from EDF to advise they are coming round to replace our electric meter as its 'coming to the end of its life'.

We don't get our electric through EDF. Should they be coming round to replace our meter? Does anyone know who I should contact to check this out?
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
Fingers crossed x

  • did you used to get your electric from them their records might be wrong, normally it's who you get your bills from that arranges to change meters gas or electric, although it is normally another company that actually does the work
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Thanks for the reply Keith, I thought that would be the case.

I'm going to try and get in touch with our current provider to see what is going on.

A perfectly normal situation and request by EDF. Your meter is the responsibility of your local DNO (Distribution Network Operator) NOT the people who supply you with electricity. The DNOs cover different areas and MAY have the same name as an electricity supply company but will be a different part of that company.

    You can find out who is your DNO here;

It's not your meter-it belongs to the DNO, which in your case is presumably EDF. Meters are typically replaced on a 10 year cycle, so really nothing to get worked up about-just make sure you take your own closing and opening reads.

Interesting. Why would that not happen? Just forgotten about or a much longer cycle?

I believe there that there are in excess of a million changed every year-it's inevitable that some slip through the net.

    you reckon?
  • Some meters have a 10 year guarantee of accuracy, although I know of ones that are rated for upto 25 and some newer ones are rated for upto 40 years (according to a local electricity board source)
    baldly going on...
  • Well our meter has been here for the last 18 years that we've lived here, and it looks like something from the 50's! Think we might have been left off the replacement list for a while, so perhaps we are due a new one :)

I was interested as I received 2 or 3 letters about five years ago asking me to arrange an appointment for my electric meter to be changed. At that point I couldn't find the time so I ignored them.

Their last letter said they would contact me occasionally to seek an appointment but I have heard nothing more.
