So... how much for a 2-year-old Geely in 2014?

I was in automotive back in the early nineties.
We were buying chinese electronics then, every car manufacturer, (including Nissan, Honda/Rover) were importing components from there.
They took our specs, looked at our products, made them for half the price, and have had twenty years to work on it since, and we've been feeding them our improvements as well to help them along.
The Japanese have done the same to help them along.
Is it any wonder they have developed all the technology they need to produce anything we can, but a lot cheaper?0 -
It's usually the (Western-written) software that causes the gip now.
You've not worked with much Chinese-written software then have you?
It's pretty much the same except it looks like the designers were following Microsoft UI guidelines from 1995 and they rarely bother to translate the error messages.0 -

Actually I have -- I'm a network engineer and we do occasionally deal with Huawei equipment. Apart from some rather comical translations here and there they tend to be one of the more reliable vendors. Stupid random problems caused by Huawei not rigidly following IEEE/IETF specifications are much rarer IME than one or two US companies I could mention!
(Of course Huawei did steal one of those companies' entire code-base several years ago!)0 -
Huawei kit does seem to be pretty decent I'll grant. Not a company I've personally had any dealings with though.
I guess your comment about software is probably referring to Cisco then? what with their tendancy to be all "There's 3 current versions of the software for Device X. All of them have different bugs, pick the version that has the bugs you can live with".0
