BA domestic flights tend to be a set fee which only gets more expensive closer to the flight date.
However, you can get a flexible return for 9k Avios and £27.
Otherwise look at BMI or Easyjet.

You can get cheap advance tickets on the train.

Alas bmi no longer run GLA-LHR so there is no competition on the route, so if you want to fly to Heathrow there is no other choice

As Malkie says Avios are a good deal for this. Tesco are currently doing bonus miles so for every £2.50 in tesco vouchers you get 1,000 avios

Why would anyone choose BA over easyjet for such a short flight is beyond me.. The only extra you get on board with BA is a bag of peanuts and a cup of tea, and a 23kg luggage allowance is unlikely to be needed for a 2 day trip. Easyjet will let you take an earlier flight coming back for no extra charge, unlike BA who will charge a high admin fee regardless of how full the flight is.

Easy jet don't fly to Heathrow... Maybe the OP needs to bring luggage? We don't know the circumstances. Also, it depends on the type of ticket you have whether the flight can be changed or not. And finally: quite often, BA is cheaper than EZY (or RYR for that matter) on a variety of routes, that's why searching before buying is essential ;)

And £2.90 Oyster off-peak single on the Tube into London while Gatwick/Satnsted are ££s more.

Depends on where the final destination in London for the OP.

I once flew to Edinburgh and came back the same day. Yes, Easyjet/Ryanair flights would probably be cheaper, but I live just a simple 45 minute bus journey from Heathrow, so it made sense to fly with BA. Had I took a cheaper Easyjet/Ryanair flight it would take so long (+expense) to get to Stansted/Luton that I'd probably have to spend the night Edinburgh, and the trip will end up costing more than a BA flight (plus having another day off work).
  • Thanks guys for all getting back to me!

Was beginning to think I had started a fight between you all!

I would of always used easyjet/ryanair as it was a domestic flight but had to fly into heathrow.

Ended up booking with British Airways at an eye-watering £272.76 :(

    Nevermind!

I would join BAEC then OP. You could have bought 10000 avios for £143 plus the £27 fee and it would have been cheaper. Allowing for there being availability mind. You would have probably paid the same with BMI or EJ as it is a last minute thing.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

There's usually good availability on for redemption on domestic routes - long haul business and first are where the issues arise (as they represent the best value).

You only really run into issues with domestic redemption at peak times where people are booking a long haul redemption but starting from a domestic location (eg GLA-LHR-NYC).

but bmi stopped GLA-LHR, hence BA has no competition on the route
