MOT cost
How much is it for an MOT? I was sure it was about £55 as I took my parents car in earlier this year. My son got his one done too. Took our one in yesterday and fortunately it didn't need anything, and when my husband went to pay she said he was in luck as it's only £40 for the next 3 months. I'd never heard of it being reduced for any length of time and i'm pretty sure a garage can't charge what it wants. Why would it be reduced, and why for just 3 months?

They can charge whatever they want as long as its not more than the maximum £54.85, quite a lot of garages are competing for business and charges as low as £25 arent uncommon although they will be under a little pressure to claw the money back elsewhere (more stringent tests) and possibly higher repair billsBe Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Garages can charge whatever they like as long as it's not MORE than the official fee. VOSA take a fixed (fairly small) fee from each test and the rest of the official price is to cover the garage's time and costs. If the garage decides to discount on its own time then that's their (commercial) decision.0

I didn't know. I thought it was a fixed price. It was a bit of a bonus! I don't understand why they did it as they're always pretty busy - they're good.0

My main dealer had £30 MOT's a few months back. It passed without any problems, and no claw back of the discounted price! Some main dealers are honest, and provide great service.0

As has been stated above the maximum a car MOT can be is £54.85, but unless your car is in a main dealer and is also getting some other work done, to conceal the price, I've never seen another station attempting to charge the maximum and stay in business.
I get a very good rate from the tester I use but even in these straightened times I wouldn't use the dodgey guy 8 miles away from me who is charging £9.99.0 -
I pay £50 for mine. Local garage, always busy, always a fair test.0

The garage I take mine to has two rates. The standard rate and a traders rate, there's £15 difference between the two. I get my Uncle, considered a trader, to book my test but take it in myself and pay the trader rate. I always give the tester £5 for a drink, and I'm still £10 in pocket.0

It's the one place I don't get the trade rate.
Mind you I don't put the repairs their way, I do them myself, and the retest is free.
I'd rather pay more for a good job though.0 -
Just booked mine for Monday for £38 @ justmot. Fingers crossed.0
