My windscreen was smashed with a hammer...

Windscreen replacement has to be declare as a claim for as long as the company offering the quote requests, which is usually 5 years.
Not all insurers class windscreen claims as a claim. Some do, some don't. If they specifically ask if you've had any windscreen claims always be truthful. Likewise always best to ask them too. I spoke to a company a few months back who said they didn't look at windscreen claims or cancelled claims at all.0 -

Not a straight windscreen claim he its been smashed with a hammer is it?0 -
True and presumably that also then means they might not be able to claim. I know some of the windscreen companies aren't fussy though. One windscreen company I dealt with a while back made it perfectly clear they'll replace any screen via the insurance as long as it goes through them directly because thats how they make their profit.0

I've never met anyone that cared. So long as you paid the excess, and showed the policy, they would put any screen in anything, and swear the same type came out.0 -

I'll contact the police to find out what they did to him.
You'll need to declare it if you claim. However it shouldn't affect your premium much as windscreen damage does not affect your NCD (assuming no other damage to the car was caused).
Put it through your insurance and let them worry about the matter
Edit: just read on and found out you've discovered this yourself already"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Did you tell them about the hammer bit?
Yes I told them about the hammer, it was Direct Line and they said all I have to pay is £75 excess and it wouldn't affect my no claims bonus or premium.
The police came to my house to take a statement and informed me that the guy has been sectioned. They said they'll try and get me compensation but to be honest I'm not really bothered now I heard he was mentally ill.
He was calling the police begging to be sectioned before he smashed my car.
I'm still in one piece so I suppose that's all that matters and I hope the guy gets well soon.:grinheart “Truly Great Madness Cannot Be Achieved Without Significant Intelligence.”:grinheart0 -

Insurers ask if you have had any claims/losses (not have you had any "windscreen claims").
They are "claims" and do need to be disclosed to any new insurer you approach for a quote over the period being asked about (usually 5/3 years).0 -

A cautionary tale about Direct Line from when my windscreen developed a big crack. DL told me exactly the same before they put me through to Autoglass. I went through all the questions with them (the car needed a new rubber seal as well as the windscreen) but the last question Autoglass asked was a bit disturbing: "Please confirm that we can submit a claim against your insurance policy for our costs less the £75 excess?". As it was going to take them 3 or 4 days to get a windscreen I just said yes and then went and did some checking. My premium and NCD would not be affected as long a I stayed with Direct Line at subsequent renewals but if I was changing insurers my file would show a claim. I went back to Autoglass who wanted nearly £500 if I paid but the local main dealer fitted a new windscreen with the hot bonding kit and new rubber seal for £374! They do a 50% reduction on labour for cars over 5 years old - BMW dealers aren't always that bad!0 -

As I said, a claim is a claim and you must disclose this to any future insurer. (within their normal time frames)
However, I don't know of any insurer that will reduce the NCD because of a windscreen claim."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
