Yes, I've gone through all the requirements, its just that I bought a Windows 7 upgrade disc, and in the past when doing a clean install using an XP upgrade disc on a blanked harddrive (NTFS) doing a clean install, it asked me to insert an earlier copy to verify I had full Windows copy during the process, so cutting out the need to install an earlier version when installing the upgraded version of Windows XP.

So this time when doing a clean install on a blanked harddrive (NFTS)using an upgrade I wondered if I could use the earlier full copies 98/2000 or the XP upgrade to verify it.

As JamesK10 has suggested, double install the Windows 7 disc. You don't need the XP disc.

But a Windows 7 upgrade version will need verifying on a blanked harddrive during install - its just that I don't want to go through all the trouble of installing an earlier full copy version to get there(I have full copies of 98/2000 and an upgrade copy of XP)

I hope you are right, but in past installations of an upgrade copy, it asked me for a full version copy to verify it before it would allow the installation to proceed.

By the time you've been back and forth on the forum much longer, you could have installed the earlier copy and been up and running.

If you have a retail copy of the Win 7 upgrade disc then read all the blurb that comes with it, inside and outside the box. It specifically states that you CAN NOT upgrade XP and it must be done as a clean install. I have upgraded 3 XP machines by doing a clean install. You do not get asked for a disc to verify the upgrade.

When I did a clean install using XP upgrade on a formatted harddrive in the past, in the process a full version of Windows was asked to verify the XP upgrade, then I removed the full earlier version Windows 98 disc I had inserted and then it allowed the process to continue.

This is not an XP upgrade. Using the same terminology, this is a Win 7 upgrade (from XP)
