Broadband advice

I have friends who live just outside of Lincoln who are struggling to find a decent broadband provider. It seems that anywhere outside of Lincoln city is considered rural and therefore doesn't warrant good service. They are currently with Sky, and are paying £15+ for a 2mb service. They have looked at Plusnet & Talk Talk but they are slated on reviews.

by what ican work out it do's not mater who your with its still the same wire it comes down ,
so if they get 2mbs now thats what some one else will give,you might be lucky and a bit more or unlucky a bit less

Well I'm with Orange and I'm more than happy. Decent speeds, unlimited use and recently when I thought my router had a fault they sent out a new one immediately.
I have broadband with free evening/weekend calls.

Do an exchange search on www.samknows.com for your LLU providers, these will be the best deals.
'Rural' is not necessarily relevant, it's what exchange they're on that matters (as broadband is exchange-specific).
If they are currently on Sky Connect (non LLU service) then that is just a resold BT Wholesale product, and not well thought of. Or is it Sky LLU?
If they are a long way out from the exchange then 2MBps may be all that their line can support.
If they are on the Lincoln exchange, then several LLU providers are available, including Sky.

They are very likely in a bundled exchange as very few exchanges are unbundled in Lincolnshire. If they live a distance from the exchange their speed will be slow. There is little they will be able to do about the speed/cost if the exchange is bundled- 17 quid a month is about the average charge for broadband in the county.

Nearly every broadband provider are slated by customers- however if your friends are in bundled exchange I'd recommend they go with BT/Plusnet from a logistical standpoint (ie they own the exchange and will not "pass the buck" if a problem arises).

The glimmer of hope for your friends is that fibre is going to be rolled out to 90% of the county in the next three years (like everywhere) and that 4G may be viable sooner than that.

Incorrect. The exchanges are run by BT Openreach, who have the same commercial relationship with BT Retail as they do with any other telcom or ISP (including Plusnet) The consumer cannot contact OR direct, but if there is a line or exchange fault it is dealt with via the ISP or line rental provider in exactly the same fashion.
