Hello All,
Ok so it's the typical story....naive young woman buys first car...with no warranty..
I bought a car 5 months ago and it's just had it's MOT and failed. The mechanic said it needs a lot of welding work which could cost 100's
He also said that the person who sold me this car KNEW that it would fail it's next MOT
Is there something ANYTHING I can do??? Anyone? Can I report him??
If nothing else, I can tell people not to buy cars from him can't I? He is a local dealer.
Thank you
Please be sympathetic, at least I can learn from this.
Please help

Trading standards.
How much was the car?
If it was a decent price, for a reasonable car, rather than £100 for a wreck, if the car is unroadworthy, you can reject it, and ask for a refund.
If it's in the first six months the dealer has to prove the faults wheren't there, you don't have to prove they were.
There are quite a few threads on here at the moment about dodgy car dealers, and the rejection process is well documented in several of them.0 -
I would say live and learn.
Next time you buy a car get someone with more knowledge to look it over.
Can not see how the mot station can say the dealer knew about the welding, it was probably a trade in, part ex.
What did you pay for the car?
Is it a Ford KA?Google gives you answers use it.........0 -
How old was the car and how much did you pay for it? Just because the dealer didn't give a warranty doesn't mean he isn't liable under the Sales of Goods Act, but this liability will vary depending on what you paid - clearly the expectations from a £10k or £1k car are different.
Welding shouldn't always be hugely expensive though - I've just put a new sill onto my VW Golf, cost £25 for the sill from eBay. Even if I'd paid someone to put it on I would be expecting change from £200.
And as you've probably learnt, when buying a car take someone with you who knows about cars, or pay for an AA inspection. Be thankful it wasn't something expensive (e.g. head gasket) or dangerous (e.g. brakes) that were wrong.0 -
Always buy a car with a full 12 months MOT. It's not a gaurantee but there is usually a reason why someone sells one with only 5 months. The reason is usually that they know it won't pass.0

Well, it's an internet forum. Anyone can post.
The op can either take your advice as a car trader, or can speak to trading standards tomorrow.0 -

thats very unfair and not correct i said in a previous post that when i used to send cars to auction they went there because they were rubbish i do not retail rubbish and your post is out of order0 -

So what you actually mean is buyer beware, when they buy from you?0
