Best cookbook...

What is the best cookery book for cooking good basic family meals please?

Just need some recommendations please :) I want a book as I don't have time to browse the net for recipes.

  • Try the Old Style Board - I loot their recipes all the time. They should do a cook book.

And stuff Jamie Oliver etc, I had an old annual style Hamlyn Family recipe book that I got in a charity shop that never let me down.

I suppose you could look for a severely used one in a charity shop or jumble sale - if its been used that much it must be good lol

Teach me to read in a hurry, you dont want the net. Seriously recommending Delia, Jocasta Innes and avoid Jamie Oliver etc.

I'd actually give my vote for Jamie Oliver's 'Ministry of Food' delicious meals that are simple to make. we use the 'twenty minute meals' section regularly. there's lots to try and i got it when i first moved in with my now husband so knew very few recipes and it really helped

be warned he does love his chillies! x x

The Good Housekeeping recipe books are brilliant. I have one with 1000 recipies in it, its got really basic stuff up to more fancy things, any ingredients you have it has a recipe for them.

Great minds ;). He's also obsessed with olive oil, which I do use but sparingly.

I'm a fan of the good housekeeping cookery book. Amazon stock for £15 and its a new edition (2011). My mum had one and so did her mum. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Housekeeping-Cookery-Book-Companion/dp/184340592X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328803615&sr=8-1 I then supplement with a bit of Nigella and Jamie!
  • I got Lorraine Pascale's home cooking made easy for xmas and love it. Unlike other books, every recipe I've tried from this one has turned out great.

I swear by Fay Ripley's (Jenny from Cold Feet) family cook book.

This is a difficult one, because (for me at least) there isn't one single recipe book that I use for all meals, - I tend to use two or three recipes from each of the books I've got. I wonder how typical that is, to have quite a few cookery books and only use a select few of the recipes in each book..

I've got that, it's a good book. I am cooking the slow cooked pork from there as we speak, it's been in since 1pm and the house smells lovely. I still have to wait 2 hours before I can eat it!

Some of the Good Food books are good ( as is the magazine ). You can get good cheap family cook books from The Works, I was browsing at a few earlier, most were £1.99
