Name and shame a seller?

There are other ways to deal with rogue sellers than posting their name on a message board, so please use them.
It's fairly easy to change user ids even by not opening a new account so if they are rogues it won't do them any harm at all.
Report sellers first to Ebay, via "item not as described", "non performing seller", etc. After that for consumer issues Trading Standards will investigate, for fraud the police should investigate. With these involved there's always a chance that any money lost will be refunded, posting someone's name on the internet most definitely won't do that, especially as most complaints would end up being by someone overcharged 20p for postage!
Even if Trading Standards just log the name, if everyone reports a seller when they have a problem then they will investigate and they have more legal powers than most people would expect. So if at first it looks as though nothing is getting done it may be that things are happening behind the scenes, naming and shaming culprits online could actually hinder such investigations..0 -
I think it's very wrong to name and shame on a forum, or any publicly viewed outlet
The other person cannot defend themselves, it is not fair at all, even if the other person did see the article written against them and then respond to it, it's too late to undo what was said, a persons business, livelyhood, reputation etc could be ruined.
I totally agree that rogue sellers are... (sorry can't think of an appropriate bad word that's clean enough for a public forum) but to get revenge on them through naming and shaming is not the way ahead, and could land you in trouble for slander or even worse if they send there equally nasty mates round.
So whilst it would be excellent to see the rogues get their just deserves, allowing naming and shaming would open up an opportunity for any nutter (buyer, seller, neighbour, ex-girlfriend) to get one over on someone, and really not fair at all
Don't know how the papers get away with it though0 -
Agree, it's not an ideal solution, there are rogues on both sides.
Cheers for replies everyone.0 -

Thanks RFW, e-bay have advised that I report the seller who 'ripped me off' to the Police Internet Fraud Department and that they (ebay) will provide the police with all the info needed and of course advise me to report the seller to trading standards.
I am not quite sure how I report him to the police Internet Fraud Dept. Has any one got contact details please, it would be most helpful. x:(:smileyheaMagenta0 -
Magenta, some Forces have specialised Internet fraud teams, but not all.
IMHO eBay usually tell every Tom, !!!!!! and Harry to report what they cannot deal with to the Police. But they generally have no idea it is criminal or civil.
Ring or go to your local station if you feel it warrants it.0
