Skyplus box without subscription?

Hi all!
At home I have a sky dish and the cables still running into the house left by the previous owners. I have never used Sky and have an old tv with built in freeview.
Is there any benefit for me if I pick up a cheap second hand skyplus box and connect it up? Will I get any more channels than I currently get on standard freeview?

I am not techy minded at all so thanks in anticipation :)

  • You will only get the standard freeview channels and you will need a Freesat Card or an expired Sky subscription card. Also you wont be able to use the recording/playback functions without a Sky subscription.

It might be worth checking if their standard tv/phone/broadband package is cheaper than what you're currently paying as they've got some good deals at the moment and the box is free.

Not stricktly true, whilst you can view the free channels without subscription you can also use the record/play ect without subscribing to Sky at a cost of £10 per month.

You can't get any Freeview channels on a Sky box. You will get the Sky non-subscription channels (Freesat From Sky).
Freeview is a terrestial service via an aerial.
The channel listings are available on the respective websites.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Oh a recording facility would be great! I will look into that

Since that will cost you £120pa, every year, forever, you'd be better off buying a Freesat PVR instead, with no ongoing cost.

I've just cancelled my Sky subscription and wanted to know how to still access the recording facility. Where is a good place to get a Freesat PVR - are they expensive and are there any other benefits to getting one.
