need to sell car urgently

  • thanks for all the suggestions. the mileage is low, but it is a very good car. I would have used it for a long time if I am not leaving UK. I will try out the auctions (sure sell) if I don't get a better offer anywhere else. I reduced the price to £4900 already (I bought it for £6000 from dealer and I am the second owner).

Dealers will always quote you less as they need to sell it for a profit. The likes of WeBuyAnyCar.con will give you a nice looking quote, then when you turn up with the car will find a whole bunch of excuses to knock the price down.

Only way to get chose to the book valuation is a private sale and deal with all the hassle of tyre kickers, test pilots, teenagers who can't get insured on it and other assorted idiocy.

yes, dealing with unknown people for selling the car is very risky. if they cause any damage to my car, I think I will have to pay from my pocket i.e. excess even if I am ready to lose my no claim bonus (even if they have comprehensive insurance with their car) and also takes more time to sell that way. no option is easy.

If you're moving abroad then at least you don't have to worry about your no-claims bonus.

But yes, you have a choice of either accept a low price from a dealership, or accept the risk of dealing with idiots and time wasters during a private sale.

Remember that those dealers will also have to deal with idiots and time wasters, as well as the risk of the car not selling at all, so think of the dealer price as their fee for doing that for you.

Nice clean Veccies will retail at around the £5k mark, so please don't think that you will get anything like that from any potential buyer. Autotrader will be your best bet and hope that a private, cash buyer turns up.

I need to sell my car urgently, because I am moving abroad early next month. I checked the valuation of the car in "whatcar.com" and called up some dealers, but their quote is much less than the price shown on the website. their quote is £1500 less than the price shown on the site. I advertised the car on Gumtree and AutoTrader as well. the car is in very good condition. it is 2008 Vauxhall Vectra 5dr hatchback and the mileage is 24K and I am selling it for £5500. is there anyway I can get a better price somewhere else? Thanks in advance

Try pistonheads.com. Sell privately with all your invoice and receipts for work done on the car.

Never ever ever sell to a dealer. You'll be given the least money.

Clean the car yourself, using autoglym or meguiars, get some rubber gloves and run your fingers round the edge of the wheel arches and get all the muck off, thats what causes rust on the arches. Wax the car with autoglym wax to get that shine and clean the wheels. A shiny car that runs well will get more attention. Pistonheads is good for pictures.

  • I posted the ad in Pistonheads.com. I reduced the price to £4500 (I bought it for £6000) now. Thanks. If I can't sell it before I leave, can I authorise a friend to sell it for me? is it allowed? is it a good idea to do so (though it is a hassle for them to deal with private buyers and not sure if they will agree for it)? I have less than a month left now. Thanks for all your suggestions.

You can do that, yes, but it will make many people suspicious as the address on the logbook wont match your friend's address. You could also make your friend the registered keeper but then people will be suspicious as to why he's trying to sell on a car he only just bought. They'll assume he found something wrong with it.
  • Stop faffing around or you'll run out of time. Get it sold and make the best of it.
