Does your granddad really want a 50" TV? That's huge! Does he have a much-larger-than average living room? He'd have to sit ever-so-far back from it...0

When my parents saw our 50'' TV they went straight down town to get one of their own - but as their room wasn't as big as ours they got the same kind but in a 42''. Their room is only about 13'x13' but they love it - Dad says it's one of the best things he's bought. He needs the subtitles and he can see them easily now. I've seen recommendations for room and screen sizes and think they're rubbish. I've sat just feet from the screen and can watch it fine - unless your face is practically touching the screen I don't see a problem.
We have a Panasonic Viera but my son has a newer model and has TruSurround and the sound is far better than ours (although there's nothing wrong with our sound) but when you hear the sound on my son's TV the difference is like night and day.0 -
I've got a Panasonic plasma, it's the best non-CRT TV I've ever seen.
Large viewing angle (in fact I have not found a position in which I cannot see the picture correctly (It's in a corner)), the blacks are actually black not bright shiny grey, it's full HD, the colours are nice and deep.
Mine's 42" and is in what I consider to be a small living room, a 50" would be fine in a normal sized living room. Although everyone's opinion of what's a small or large room is probably different!0 -
acs - would love to know what part of the industry you're in. Do you make Monster Cable?! You're talking absolute rubbish about picture and TV lifetime.
Plasma TVs don't even have a 'viewing angle' - this is an LCD phenomenon that would make a picture unviewable if viewed too far away from straight ahead. As LCDs have got better, this problem has mostly gone away. LCDs and LEDs (you know they're the same thing, since you're in the industry) are actually more prone to having a dead pixel.
You're spot on with regards to sound, apart from the Bose part.
John Gray - of course he wants a 50" TV! Brilliant! Well, I assume they've measured up...0 -
LCDs and LEDs (you know they're the same thing, since you're in the industry) .
No they are not!
Two entirely diffenrent types of semiconductor, though you do get both in some screens. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I think the previous poster is referring to the fact that most screens sold as 'LED' are just LCD with LED lighting.adouglasmhor wrote: »No they are not!

Thought I was going mad reading this, one of the reasons we went for plasma was viewing angle! Out of curiosity I just went and stood with my eyeline virtually level with the front of our TV and I could still see the picture quite clearly!!What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

So they are different then? I know what they meant but they were at best partly right. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

They are not different in any meaningful way. They are all LCD TVs.
All of them require a light source behind the screen. This can either be CCFL or LED.
LED is becoming increasingly common, but it is still just the light source, not the screen itself. The screen on all of them is LCD.
To make a distinction between the two is ,at best, misleading.
To quickly address incorrect statements further up the thread:-
Plasma can be viewed from any angle with no loss of picture quality. LCDs have a narrow viewing angle beyond which the picture degrades.
Both plasma and LCD will theoretically last longer than anybody will ever want them for. 30 years plus at 8 hours a day use.
I'll confirm this in February 2042 if anybody is still around:D
Finally, apologies to almillar. I know you already said all of this, but I felt it was worth repeating0
