Engine shalled at high speed [Ford Mondeo]

When I say the engine stalled, that's the best way to describe it, i'm not actually sure what happened.

I was travelling about 90mph when the battery light come on for a couple of seconds, followd by the oil light and every other light on the dashboard. Steering tough. So I slowed the vehicle down, whacked hazards on, pulled over and restarted the engine - problem solved.

This isn't the first time it's happened either. It happened a month or so back a couple of times travelling between 80-90mph.

Anybody know anything about this?

I don't often drive fast so not sure if it's related to speed or this is just coincidental.

I'll also add, this is not a thread about the dangers of speeding so if you've never heard of 5th gear please don't climb on the pedastal and [STRIKE]moan/insult me[/STRIKE] tell me off! (I seldomly speed tbh)

Even if the engine stalled, if it was in gear, at 90mph, the car would drive the engine, and keep the oil pressure up, so the light would stay off.
Did you declutch, or change to neutral?

    Was it a diesel?

I had this exact thing happen on a test-drive of a TDCI130, and a work colleague's TDCI115 did the same thing the other week. Complete cutout, lights on dash like a Christmas tree, wouldn't restart until had come to a halt.

Strange coincidence if that's what it is.

Sounds like the 'variable speed sensor' has/is failing/failed. The engine management unit will not be getting a signal as to how fast the car is traveling, so will reset, causing a momentary cutting-out of the engine.

This happened to me. Cost about £40 for the sensor and another £40 to fit as a previous mechanic had sheared the pin so it had to be drilled-out.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

    Unleaded unfortunately.

    Ah, perhaps.

Service due soon, will see about having this checked/rectified at the same time :)

It will restart whilst on the move but you need to turn the ignition full off 1st.

Not sure if the steering lock can activate with the key in whilst doing that?

Voltage issues can cause all sorts of problems, Duff battery or alternator or ignition pack or
    dodgy wiring.

Tough. You want to drive at 90mph go and find a race track where only your own life is at risk and not that of others. Running late maybe? Then set off earlier. And you tell us these car problems have occured before? How do you propose to control your 90mph free-wheeling car the next time it cuts out and you have to brake and steer quickly to avoid an incident ahead?

    PURE SELFISHNESS.

Of course he could have been in germany on a motorway or the isle of man where there is no national speed limit outside the built up areas.:p

The OP asked a genuine question, don't be so quick to jump on your soap box.

If speed kills, why aren't all F1 drivers dead?

By the way, on a race track there is others. Other drivers, spectators, marshals, etc. But hey, don't let that get in the way of you having a moan.

At 90, the car was possibly doing closer to 80mph, which is proposed to be the new NSL.

OMG Think of the kittens :A
