Always lay a wheel under the car near to the jack BEFORE you get under it, if the jack gives way you'll have saved yourself from a brake disc through the ribcage.

    Safety first people!

I'd prefer the car on axle stands before I got under it. With those, the car isn't going to drop at all, if the jack gives way. In fact, it isn't going to drop at all, even if you take the jack away.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • Halfords used to do a set with trolley jack, axel stands and I think wheel chocks as well.

B&Q do the same set. Got one for £15 last year.

I use axle stands and also have two trolley jacks a couple of mm from supporting the car on the sub frame or jacking points or if the wheels are not being accessed, run it up on car ramps. Got some Halford ones off ebay for £15.00 second hand.

tut tut, should never place a wheel under there, especially alloy ones, wieght of a car with alloys can smash through them easily and still crush anyone underneath.

ive seen people lay bricks under cars to and i think !!!!!! as soon as a car drops on those they will collapse or smash and still crush ya!.

always have an axel stand at hand even when changing a tyre, it takes less than a few seconds to place and put a pin in it to secure.

can be stored in the boot. ive got one in my boot at all times with my small wrench and screw driver set, telescopic tyre wrench, bottle of water, yellow flourescent jacket and triangle and all is kept securely under the boot carpet not to take space up.

I would also caution people using axle stands, to study the manual and find out where you can safely jack the car up and place the stands.
We don't want the jack or stands punching their way through a floor pan do we?

Just to say, my local Halfords had an off on the 2 tonne and 2.25 tonne trolley jacks, buy the jack and get the 2 axel stands free.
