They can still be referred to as HM Customs & Excise.Gordon_Hose wrote: »I notice you spoke to "Cutoms & Excise"... do you mean HM Revenue & Customs? If not, if should be HMRC you need to speak to.0 -
Actually, it's HM Customs & Excise's £4.

Currently yes... but technically no. Not if has been charged incorrectly
But you did not tell us all that at the start.
All you said was something that amounted to "I know I am right, hands up everyone who agrees with me".
Little snips of information have had to be prised from you as the thread progressed.
I thought I had posted the relevant stuff in what was a fairly detailed first post and have since been happy to clarify any issues.0 -
OP, can you not find these cheaper anywhere else - wickes, screwfix etc? If so, return the boots to Amazon and shop elsewhere.0

Didnt come across as happy to me :rotfl:
Anyway, since you're writing off your complaint....keep it simple and to the point. Don't make it a big long story. Relevant points :
- the boots meet requirements for VAT exemption
- you were charged VAT of £4.01 (or whatever it was)
- you want a refund for the VAT paid.
Include your order/invoice number and contact details and that you look forward to hearing their reply. Means they dont have to go sifting through paragraphs to get the important details, they dont have to spend 10 minutes reading it and the less time they spend reading it, the quicker you'll get a response. You keep using that word. I would also add that you have verified with HMRC and the manufacturer that the boots are exempt. If you have emails to back this up, include them. Shoot their arguments down before they start.
Personally, I think you're totally right to complain. Sure, it might not be much on a £20 purchase, but imagine if you'd bought these ones:

Honest guv... I was.
By trying to be 'to the point' this can sometimes be misconstrued as being 'unhappy' or worse....

If you are VAT registered, just process the invoice through your books as a normal (VAT payable) purchase and you can still reclaim the VAT.0

:rotfl: I believe you
I tend not to put too much weight in what people say on the net. Can't see their faces to tell from their expression what sort of mood they're in, nor can you hear their voice to tell what tone they're using!
Its the posters that resort to acting like children just because someone disagrees with them that I think need a time out (they want to act like kids, they should be treated as such tbh!). At max I'll give it 3 attempts to try and get them to be sensible, if that fails.......stuff it! I have better things to do
Or at least I would have if my ankle wasn't broken

The criteria is:
Many protective boots and helmets qualify for a VAT rate of 0%, when the following conditions are met:

They must be for industrial use
.
I bought some similar protective boots from amazon for personal use - gardening etc and I bet a fair proportion sold on amazon are for personal rather than industrial use - so amazon are probably correct to charge the VAT
As others have said, if yours are for industrial use you should be able to claim the VAT back through the company0
