Going to book a surprise weekend for partner and I but not good a booking travel. If we're leaving from Edinburgh Airport which is the best London airport to fly into or are they all well served by tube going into centre? Thanks

Heathrow - tube into the city or Heathrow Express to Paddington
Gatwick - Station at south Terminal with regular trains into the city (e.g. Gatwick Express to Victoria)
Stanstead - Rail station on site
Luton - shuttle-bus then rail
Check National Rail Enquiries for prices of trains & TFL for underground
Why not do a comparison with rail travel direct from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross on National Rail Enquiries site0 -
Stansted - train or coach
Luton - train or coach
Heathrow - Tube, train or coach (coach is useful if you are heading for Victoria area)
Gatwick - train or coach (though coach is generally a bad idea as it's slow)
London City - Tube
The websites of the airports tell you all about the options
Wouldn't recommend the Heathrow Express unless someone else is paying for it as it rarely is quicker unless you are heading for the Paddington area. In that case a car service would be cheaper than 2 tickets on the HEX or you could use the far cheaper Heathrow Connect to reach Paddington

City airport is the closest then all of them and then DLR and Jubilee line in will be your quickest option.
trouble is fares to City Airport are not going to be cheap so you need to weigh up the journey times and prices in from stanstead and Gatwick(heathrow really is a no no imo) compared to the cost of a flight into city airport"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
OMG so many choices..... Weighing it all up, sounds like the East Coast train direct from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross would actually be the quickest option! Its only 4 1/2 hrs door to door and costs about the same as two flights. I'm thinking of booking Travelodge at Kings Cross (I see there is there a Travelodge called Royal Scot??) does anyone know if it would be horribly noisy or could suggest a cheaper Travelodge which is very central but quieter (and cheaper) ? Thanks again to all helpers.0

I found the train to Edinburgh was excellent and very quick compared to flying when you take into account check in time and getting to an from airport, East Coast often do cheap advance tickets if you book direct on their site I think I saw it for £18.50 ew.
If you do go on plane I never use Gatwick express as you can get an ordinary ticket for much less and go to London Bridge and Thames Citylink as well as Victoria, the trains use the same track so have same signalling problems (if there are any) just stop maybe once more.0
