We were going to do this at our wedding but one of my husband's mates ripped off our idea so it went to waste - I got a load of glass dishes from tk maxx and sourced the sweets online but cannot for the life of me remember what it was called.

you might be better off asking a mod to move this to the weddings board as there was a similar thread on there and they could be merged x

Ripped off your idea? I've seen this on Don't Tell The Bride and if you google 'candy buffet' you get thousands of results. I don't think you can claim it as your own invention! ;)

I do get favours though, they are a lovely momento of the day.
Really? I remember as a little girl my parents coming home with books of matches which were played with (yes I played with matches:eek: ) then discarded.

I'm trying to think of any favours I've kept (longer than a few months before binning).
    • Chocolate eggs I eat and discard the bit of net they are in.
    • Sugar almonds - bin!
    • wicker napkin ring with some flowers on:o -bin
    • wedding ring key ring - drawer somewhere
    • scroll poem - drawer for years then bin
What I did like at a wedding were home made heart shaped welsh cakes made by a grannie of the happy couple.

I genuinely had never heard of this before but I just typed 'candy buffet' into google and you were right.

I can't believe how much some of them want to charge though. It looks like such a simple thing to organise youself!

I wonder if we've been to the same wedding? A friends gran made some heart shaped welsh cakes for her wedding last year. They looked wonderful and tasted even better.

I did this for my wedding last year and it was a huge success with everyone of all ages, even my Gran went home with a huge bag of sweets. There was none left at the end of the night at all. In fact the adults loved it more than the kids, think my cousin (40yrs) ate so many he was ill the next day.
I got my jars from a supermarket for £1 each and a big bowl from a charity shop and filled them with loads of jelly sweets, fizzy laces, some cheap chocs that were in the sale after easter, maoams, UFO's and refresher bars. I have a local bookers card so got them from there. I think everything came to about £40.
You can get loads of paper bags off ebay for not a lot.

I would recommend this hugely!! Can not say how different everyone said it was and we used them as favors as well as a little wooden rose. Much better than the usual almonds or suchlike as a favor.
Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.

I've had houseplants before, boxes of handmade sweets in tins that have been embossed with the details of the day, fridge magnets, cuddly toys (which have been strung up on the curtain pole in the spare room), religious symbols which have taken pride of place in my prayer room...and best of all some beautiful glittery Indian dancing sticks that come out once a year.

I'm pretty sure only kids won't eat them we all like sweets in our family. We may use then as favours too so kind of doubles up then.

We clerared the local stockist of http://www.jellybelly-uk.com/ and the kids (and a couple of adults) had hours of amusement sorting them and trying different flavours.
    Been away for a while.

I guess you've got to know your audience! I would find it lame, but then I'm a proper grump. I don't like anything overly "cute" or "ironically retro" for the sake of it, and when things are "going to be a laugh", they generally aren't. Told ya, I'm a killjoy... :o

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

sorry I must have missed the bit where I claimed to have invented it? we were discussing our plans for our respective weddings and I said we were having a sweetie table and told her what it involved. "that's such a good idea" she said and asked me lots of questions about it, then we went to her wedding a few months before ours and they'd done the same as we were planning.

I've never watched "don't tell the bride" so couldn't comment as to the content.
