we have decided to do a little sweet shop at our wedding. we have seen you can hire such things but have thought that to do it ourselves would be quite fun. has anyone else done one themselves? we would like some ideas if anyone has any. we have been looking in usual places for the best sweet prices. thank you

go to charity shops and buy lots of different glass vases and fill them with penny sweets, then buy those little pink and white striped paper bags. Its a cute chintzy look thats quite cheap to do0

Also it could be nice to fill the jars with some classic boiled sweets like rhubarb and custard, lemon sorbets, and others such as toffee bonbons. These are great and can be quite retro, with the added bonus of them taking longer to eat, people enjoy them for longer, so the kids (and adults) are happy.0

My friend had one at her wedding and it was a nice touch!
You may get a better response by re-posting this one the wedding board

We did our own at my sons wedding having seen them at wedding fares. We got glass containers in sales and charity shops and filled them with old fashioned penny sweets, shrimps etc.
We bought some little bags and got some stickers from eBay with bride and grooms name and date on them.
It was really popular! bride didn't do other favours, just a little baggies of goodies.0 -
We were going to do this at our wedding but one of my husband's mates ripped off our idea so it went to waste - I got a load of glass dishes from tk maxx and sourced the sweets online but cannot for the life of me remember what it was called.
you might be better off asking a mod to move this to the weddings board as there was a similar thread on there and they could be merged x0 -
Not wishing to be rude but what is the point? I recently went to a wedding where they had a sweet shop and at the end of the evening it was still half full so we all took some home for our children (hehehe the youngest was 13
).
We (as in the group of friends I was with) just commented that it was a waste of money. Then again I don't understand why people do favours either - I'm turning into Victoria Meldrew:rotfl:

Some people seem to go out of their way to make weddings more complicated and expensive than they already are!0 -
I agree Poppy9, I can't see anyone but children being interested. Adults are far more attracted to a free bar
.
I do get favours though, they are a lovely momento of the day. Then again I don't understand why people do favours either - I'm turning into Victoria Meldrew:rotfl:Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

A friend had one, the kids loved it and you could see a lot of adults were hovering but unwilling to use the little bags, they probably felt a bit silly in their posh frocks!
I suggest bags for the kids, and maybe little dishes for the grown ups. I think its a nice idea and cheaper than spending a fortune on a chocolate fountain or a load of fresh desserts from a caterer.0 -
I haven't done this for a wedding but a couple of years ago my OH wouldn't tell me what he wanted for his birthday and then jokingly said I should get him some sweets. So I went to the cash and carry with the card from my sisters sports team and spent £50 on sweets. There were so many it took him and his colleagues in work the best part of 2 months to finish them.
It's worth asking around amongst friends and family in case you know someone who has a cash and carry card because you can just buy the big tubs/bags.
To be honest I've never heard of this being done at a wedding and think it's a really fun idea. I'm goign to be filing this in the back of my mind until I get married
EDIT
OOOOOO! You could collect together loads of old jam jars, clean them, create you own special stick on wedding labels and leave the empty jars there for people to fill up themselves and take home. That would be a lot more fun than a few sugared almond in a bag for wedding favours!0
