If you call your grandmother your 'nan' you are clearly from the lower classes, need the money, and should ask her for another cheque.

If you call your grandmother your 'granny' or 'grandma' you are clearly a superior person and can afford to do without it.

    Whut?! :rotfl:

    Frame it & keep it.
You may have the cheque forever but you won't always have your Gran.
In years to come you'll look on it & the memories will make you smile.

What an excellent idea, well said

  • Now I know why I rarely read these posts - too many judgemental folks trolling.
  • Worth bearing in mind...

if the cheque was written from a current account, your nan would still have the money if you didn't bank it. However, if the cheque came from a savings account (ie was printed by the bank or building society rather than written from a cheque book) her account would have been debited at the time the cheque was written. So if you don't bank it, it would be the firm that kept the money rather than your nan.

What you do if it was a personal (cheque book) cheque may be a tough one, but if it was a bank/building society cheque you should go back to her. She could then get a replacement or at least have her own account re-credited.

I'm also a grandma, and TBH if the cheque hadn't been cashed for a couple of weeks I'd have phoned up to ask why!! I don't think the op should just cash it now though, without at least letting gran know! She'll probably wonder what on earth it is, if she just sees an amount taken out after all this time!!

A while back, I was checking my account (I do all banking online) and there was an amount taken out, that I couldn't for the life of me think what it was!! So I phoned the bank and they told me it was cashback I'd gotten about 3 weeks before! As soon as they mentioned it I remembered!!:o But it was hassle phoning up etc! And as others have said, she might have been in a better financial position when she wrote it out, and perhaps might not be able to afford it now.
  • You are probably better saying something as some accounts, particularly building society accounts, debit the account as soon as the cheque is issued, it does not have to be cashed for your Nan's account to be debited. (I didn't bank a cheque my mum gave me, it was only when she saw it on the bureau that she told me the BS had deducted the money from her account).

As a famous tennis player once said "Man, you cannot be serious" - at least I hope you're not! I am a Grandma to my three grandchildren simply because I object to the term "Nan" or even worse "Nanny" ie someone who is employed to look after children and no, neither I nor they would regard ourselves as superior. But to deal with the question - we Grandmas are of a generation which did not spend beyond our means and I imagine the grandma in question would be mortified that the cheque had not been cashed - and just because she is a grandmother does not mean she is not on top of her finances. She might even be quite young and still working!

I'm not sure why this should be regardad as a moral problem. I'm a gran (by proxy - my step children have children) and I wouldn't mind being asked to reissue the cheque, especially if you can produce the uncashed one. I check (pardon the pun) my bank statemnt every month and so would know if a cheque I had given had not been cashed. You might suggest this to your Nan.
Julius Caesar's analysis of the name you use was interesting. My mum is known as Nanna - not sure what class this puts us in!?

The 6 month rule isn't true. Cheques can be banked any time after the date on the cheque. Take it back to the bank and insist they process it. I was told that by sombody who used to work in a NatWest branch and was a rules geek. They don't like doing it as there may be a slightly greater chance of it bouncing from what I recall him saying.

I am sure flyforfun is right. Banks do have discretion to bank an old cheque. However, so long after the cheque was written, you should warn gran that you are now banking it. She may have been in funds when she wrote it, but it might be an unpleasant surprise now when it hits her account.

No I don't think you should go back to your Gran. If you treat her birthday gift to you with such disrespect you should at least have the good manners not to admit it to her. If she subsequently challenges you about its non encashment you could perhaps say that you posted it to your bank or building society and assumed it had arrived and had been credited to your account.
