Insurance for garage employee driving car to MOT
Comments

Slightly long story but my car was up for sale just after Christmas, as I had purchased a new car. A part ex was offered on it against a car my boyfriend was buying. Unfortunately the sale on that car fell through as after investigation my boyfriend wasn't happy with the car he had intended to buy.
Now I'm back to stage 1 with the car in the garage at home, not taxed or insured and the MOT due at the end of Feb.
I don't think I stand much chance of selling the car for a decent price without a new MOT and noticed the local MOT centre doing an offer on the cost of the MOT as well as free collection and delivery from/to home address. So my question is this: If an MOT garage employee is collecting and delivering the car, do I need to insure it for the day so that they can do this or is the car insured under their garage/trader policy? Day insurance is coming in at around £38 which seems pretty steep so if I don't need to get it, I won't. Car will be going up on Ebay once the MOT is sorted.
Is it going to be worth it? Scrap yards will give you £200-£250 for any running car.
Your car has no tax, no MOT, no insurance.
Most buyers on ebay will want to test drive the car before purchase, and indeed may want to drive it home. That's presumably why you think it needs an MOT. That'll cost 50 quid or thereabouts, assuming it passes first time.
But they'll also need tax (another 100 quid or thereabouts) bit to get that you'll need insurance (who knows how much that would be ... although you may get some back if you cancel early)
And then there the advertising fee.
A lot of bother and expense unless the car you have allowed the tax, MOT and insurance to expire on is actually worth a fair few bob."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
OP you need to read the post from ukmike because this is the only correct answer to your problem
if the trade plates arent on and your car is stopped by the police its highly likely it will get taken off the garage driver because Not neccessarily
a ..........he wont have his insurance document on him The driver (As will most police officers) will normally be used to this and the police will normally check with the garage and / or their Insurers
b............its not showing on the mid Just because a vehicle is not showing on the MID does not mean it is not insured. About 5% of the vehicles that should be on the MID are not on the MID for many innocent reasons
c........... you have the vehicle on sorn which means the vehicle cannot be on the road unless its on the mid and going to a place of test0 -
Which it is
little story for you because it seems too many people watch too much tv
an acquaintance got stopped by police last week their incar screen showed no insurance
he has a trade policy with 6 vehicles on it
police refused to accept this
police refused to phone his insurer
he managed to ring his wife who gave him insurer number and he rung them then police were put on the line
insurer confirmed it was insured specifically
this took an hour of his time and also the polices time
imagine what would have happened if insurer was shut
i spoke to my insurer only yesterday about trade insurance for clarification ,it was stated to me that any vehicle in my name needs to be put on the mid within 14 days of it being taxed
i always always put everything on trade plates if vehicle is not fully insured/taxed because and trust me on this one you meet the wrong copper and your car goes off to the compound no iffs no buts just a big biill whether you are innocent or not
but what the heck i just do this rubbish for a living0 -
Thanks everyone, Premier, the car is worth a fair bit more than £200 - £250 or it would have gone to the scrappies a long time ago. Also the car has a current MOT, but it only has a few weeks left to run, the car is in pretty good nick and had no advisories on the last MOT so I'm hoping it will get through fairly easily. As far as tax goes I think cars up for sale with no tax are going to be pretty commonplace soon with the stupid new insurance law, I was pretty much forced to sorn it as I couldn't afford to insure 2 cars after the initial sale fell through (it was costing me £68 every 2 weeks to temp insure the new car). I'm planning to sell the car through eBay, I did this with the last car I sold and the guy drove 4 hours to collect it, had bought the insurance already and drove it away. Theres a post office 5 mins drive from where I live so it should be easy to get tax for it.
colino - I wasn't saying that the technician was telling porkies but I wanted to be doubly sure, he didn't mention trade plates, just that it was insured because they had a motor trade policy. Unfortunately I haven't been living in this area long enough to build up a working relationship with any garage so I just booked it in with the local place I have been to a couple of times for tyres (not quick twit before anyone asks). They've provided good service to me in the past so I figured it was better than using an unknown. Its the first time I've ever had a company collect or deliver my car though so I don't know much about that.£2012 in 2012 Challenge #232 : £561.29/£20120 -

Me to, except I do Motortrade Insurance so have a better understanding of it than you.
A customers vehicle would not normally need to be added to the MID by the motor trader for collection and delivery
I'm guessing you have a road risk only policy which the police sometimes (Incorrectly) treat differently due to them not trusting the motortrader.
The MID recommends that you notify them of vehicles that should be on the database "Immediately".
Have a read of this leaflet from the MID which is specifically for Motor traders http://www.mib.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/E5BCBA75-D5CE-40CE-B145-84CD287FD50A/0/MIBMTL0711_Motor_Trade_Spread.pdf0 -

it still stands that the op might lose his car if garage send a driver out and police have it impounded
as i say and as you will know the only safe way to move this sorned car not showing on the mid is to trade plate it or recovery if the copper doesnt want to listen0 -

I agree that trade plates should be used, however I don't agree with your original post "Its highly likely it will get taken off the garage driver". There is a chance that it may be taken off them but it's relatively low rather than highly likely as you have stated.0 -

lets take it to stage 2 then
employee sent out to collect this car
employee has a bump hits something tasty
big bill
would insurer look kindly on
same scenario trade plates on car driver has bump
he is named driver on trade plates
insurer cant squigle out of responsibilities
as an insurer i think you really should be advising OP that garage should be collecting on plates or recovery in 2012 so he doesnt get a letter through the post 6 weeks hence saying that at 2.30pm on the 8th february his untaxed uninsured car commited a moving traffic offence
the garage dont keep records of who takes what cars out on test drives and dont keep records of test routes used0 -

The lack of road tax does not invalidate a motor or motortrade policy.
If the OP has handed their vehicle to the motor trader then the accident is their problem and the RTA Motor Certificate would make them liable. If the garage was trying to deny they had the vehicle the OP would need to go down the route of proving the motortrader had the vehicle through their invoice from the garage.
This is assuming the OP had not noticed the damage the accident had caused to their vehicle when it was returned to them which would you would have thought would have rung alarm bells.0 -
i was thinking more speed cameras
6 weeks later its up to the OP he wasnt driving
i know a trader who got done because he stupidly let a customer drive a sales car unaccompanied
i know a trader who sold a car and 20 minutes after leaving his forecourt it got a gatso speeding ticket, fortunately he had taken advice and on his invoice was the time customer drove away signed by them
everything is in the detail these days
sorry for being picky im not trying to be funny just saying how it is and round my way weve had so many fatalities on our country roads we have a standard unmarked police car on duty every day at some time:)0
