Where to buy a basic laptop

Is John Lewis a resonable place to buy a laptop from? I know it will be more expensive than buying online, but it's for my mother and she isn't sure what exactly she wants in terms of screen size etc so seeing them in a shop would be best, and the customer service is good in John Lewis.
She wants one for writing documents, checking email, printing, maybe watching iPlayer, and for games like scrabble (so not fancy games requiring a high-end machine).
Am I right in thinking that any laptop would be capable of this?

For what your mother needs it for we`re talking sub £400 and you still get a good laptop for that.
John Lewis are doing one with a two year warranty for £379, it`s out of stock at the moment but maybe one to keep an eye on.

Dell have got one for £379 with a better processor but less memory and hard drive with a one year warranty.

A cheaper and more basic for £309

Go and view some/choose one in JL (or even in PCW), then buy from a reputable online supplier.
Even the most lowly modern laptop will do all those tasks with ease, so the screen size is the major factor to consider, along with the hard drive capacity, proessor and RAM.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
just be warned that a lot of the information on the john lewis site with regard to their laptops is often wrong - ie they might claim on the headline advert for a machine it has an intel premium processor, then when you click on further spec details you suddenly see they say the processer is an intel core 1.3.... (or vice-versa/ which is it? who knows? you have to do further research to find out. they also frequently have wrong or contrary information w/reg to weight/battery life/cd-dvds. etc etc. it's a problem i've also seen in-store with their labelling. i find it extraordinary that a company with such a good reputation is so misleading in their laptop product information. so the warning is to double-check everything you read.0

eBuyer or have a gander often at HUKD for offers0 -
I think with Configure To Order from Apple, Sony, Dell etc, you can get more value than picking up a standard off the shelf configuration. I like with CTO the ability to downgrade specs as well as upgrade them.0

The Argos Outlet shop on Ebay has a good selection of refurbished laptops for sale. I used it last year to buy a cheap bog standard Toshiba. Good value and quick delivery. As other people have said go and have a look in a shop (Currys/PCW,Comet,Tesco etc) and then Google the make and model !

Thanks all, I know online would be cheaper but I think my mum wants to buy one while I'm here (I'm staying for a few days) so I can set it up. I will try to pursuade her to order online though!0
