hi
l had to sell my car last oct as l could no longer afford to run one as lm, on long term ill health and cannot work so obviously ive no car insurance anymore

how can l get insured to drive my sisters car ? , do l just get put on her ins as a named driver even though lve no ins , ive always had full no claims on my ins [driven for 38 yrs no claims/points ever]
obviously id pay the extra for me to be on it oh yes she also recieves dla so has her road tax paid for her would this be a prob
it would be great if l can do this as l could take myself off to the hospital/gp/physio ect if shes having a bad day instead of her stuggling to take me
thank you

Normally yes, you'd just get added as a named driver. Though is her car a motability car? I've no idea how it words wrt that.

Your sister needs to ring her company and add you as a named driver, if you just sold your car last october it means you have > 7 years NCB, so that shouldn't increase the price of the insurance.

  • If it's a mobility car then all your sister has to do is ring them and add you as the second driver. Do beware that if she already has a second driver named, they will be knocked off the insurance and will be unable to drive. My Dad didn't know this and I ended up driving his car without insurance by accident (and, thankfully, no accidents!).

Also, for info, if anyone is fully comp and insured to drive 'other' cars, please be aware that mobility cars are not included.

    Whoa!

As much as adding you to the insurance is fine. She gets the car tax free because it is to help her get about.

It isn't for you to run about in/use the tax sadly. You will probably get away with it but technically if you are using it for your benefit and not hers, the car should be taxed properly (happy to be corrected but that's how I understand it. It's the reason me and the mrs have different cars as we're in the same situation).

What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Technically fivetide is correct, if it's a disabled tax class then the car should be used for the benefit of the disabled person. In practice nothing will happen and it's almost impossible to prove, especially if you act as a carer for the disabled person.

OP: If you're on long term sick, do you qualify as disabled. Can you claim DLA? This would solve the problem completely.

    No.

Having 7 years NCB is immaterial when you are being added as a named driver. (NCB is only of use when buying your own policy!)

Adding a male driver as a named driver onto a mature female's policy will usually result in a premium increase!
  • my elderly neighbour added another driver to his policy and it reduced theyearly premium he had to pay
