Gas.
They cook more efficiently and evenly and they're easier to clean as you can take all the gubbins out. Aren't they cheaper too? They must be able to go on pretty much indefinately as the concept is pretty simple: Let a bit of gas out, set fire to it, cook!
I cooked with electric my whole life until about 4 years ago and only then did I understood what the fuss was about. No competition for me at all; if there is gas available, gas hob it is.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Agree with Doozergirl. Some of my friends have ceramic hobs & rave about them (until they get scratched) but I prefer gas hobs.0

I like my gas hob as the heating and turning off is immediate. However I made a big mistake choosing brushed stainless steel, as it shows every splash each time its used, and dust shows up within hours even if not used. My old white one was much more forgiving and always looked clean unless it was, well, dirty!!0

it didnt occur to me about the scratching - its something thats bound to happen.0 -
I have a gas hob and an electric one (soild hotplate) I much prefer the electric. The gas one always feels dirty and is a begger to clean and I burn everything I put on it. LOLLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Ceramic hob for me everytime..I had a gas cooker and as someone else said its the most annoying thing to clean lots of bits and pieces to take off and soak if you get stuff burnt on..
I love my electric hob most times when I am just heating something or cooking porage I just bring to the boil and turn the power off , it cooks on the residual heat... saving electric , most of the time it just needs a wipe over with a microfibre cloth and comes up gleaming , but I occasionally boil over the potatoes and it needs a bit of a scrub but it takes a minute and then wipe over... mine is 6yrs old and no scratchs so far but it is a Bosch maybe cheaper versions scratch more easily.....
My daughter now has one too as she saw how easy it was to keep clean and it just looks so much nicer than a gas hob with all its bits and pieces ... IMO of course..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Whilst on the subject, what are induction hobs like? Am told they behave like gas ( I can't have gas here)0

Ceramic hobs can look more streamlined because they're flat. They might fit better in an a very modern kitchen although some of the new gas hobs are pretty snazzy too.
I wish that you could test run differant types of kitchen appliances before you buy. The best thing is to try cooking in friends kitchens & see what you're happy with. My MIL has a halogen hob which she adores & I just can't get on with. It's like most things, just depends on personal taste.0 -
Give me ceramic any day. So much easier to clean. Unfortunately the other half does most of the cooking so he gets the choice. He doesn't clean the cooker though so I give our new one 6 months before it looks ruined.:mad:0

Ceramic!!!
I bought a ceramic electric hob with touchtone controls and no knobs or border - just plain glass and it is a dream. It cleans up to a sparkling dream. My husband found ours on line for £200 it is a baumatic with 5 year guarantee as well.Food and Smellies Shop target £50 pw - managed average of £49 per week in 2013 down to £38.90 per week in 20160
