I'm off to india at end of march for two weeks and want to be able to contact my family whilst I'm there.
I'm currently on Vodaphone cashback deal and don't want to change the tariff in case I lose the cashback. can I buy a sim that will allow me to call home and that I can use in my current phone (motorola razr) or would I be better taking an old Nokia 1101 (currently unlocked) and buy a sim for a different network?

It will be difficult or impossible to find cheap roaming options, either with UK networks or one of the global roaming SIMs
Use an unlocked phone and get an Indian SIM card.
info on networks and tariffs - http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/india.html
And use the MSE Callchecker to brief your family on cheap calls to you0 -

I missed out saying it looks like Hutch has the cheapest calls to UK, and you replied before I could edit0
