Broken Beko fridge/freezer after 5 years - do I have any comeback?

As title, my fridge/freezer has packed up and I've been told it's uneconomical to repair (the compressor has gone)
TBH I would have expected it to last a lot longer than this considering it's not overused or treated badly and my mum has fridges and freezers that are older than me (26 years!)

I found this www dot whitegoodshelp.co.uk/wordpress/eu-2-year-guarantee-sales-of-goods-act-gives-us-6-years-to-claim-for-faulty-appliances/ and wondered if I had any comeback to Beko or the retailer for some form of compensation?

That article you linked to does seem quite comprehensive.
Read it all, and the comments, for a good understanding.

In there it tells you that you have upto six years to look to the retailer for a remedy.

Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights article for ideas on how to progress.

Well, firstly you have no come back to the manufacturer, they don't have a contract with you, unless you took out some form of service plan directly with them.

Secondly, to get any form of resolution from the retailer, you would need to prove that the appliance was inherently faulty. To do this you would need to get an indepenedent engineer to have a look at the appliance and be willing to report it is an inherent fault. You will have to pay for this report, but the cost can be recouped from the retailer if the report is in your favour. .

If the report states it is an inherent fault, then you will get the cost of the report back and more than likely be offered a partial refund. This will be offered at an amount which tallies with the original purchase price, what the normal lifespan of the appliance is and how long you have actually had it for. This doesn't usually equate to very much, especially on a low end appliance such as a Beko.

If the report shows it isn't inherent, well there isn't a lot you can do and you will be stuck with the cost of the report.

Personally, I'd just chalk it up to experience and buy a new one...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

5 years life expectancy is probably now quite normal for f/f. These items last nowhere as long as those made in 1970s/80s, possibly even early 1990s.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Can I just ask how you came to the conclusion its not been overused? Surely its been used daily for 5 years.

I wouldn't expect one to last more than 5 years nowadays to be honest, especially with how cheap they can be to replace.

You have nothing to lose by asking the manufacturer though

Things are made now to be thrown away, particularly at the lower end of the market 5yrs is all you can expect.

    Thanks for the replies.

Forwandert - When I said overused I mean it wasn't ever crammed full and wasn't kept in a garage or anywhere else cold both of which I know is not good for these appliances

I've had the repairs done now, it was the compressor that needed replacing and they used a whirlpool one instead of another beko as apparently the beko ones are notorious for breaking (the repair guy also worked for beko repairs!)
So I have a 12 month warranty now on anything else that might go wrong with it

I did speak to Beko but they said what other posters have advised, to go back to the retailer. I might have a go at this if I can find the receipt and remember where I bought it! Worth a try!
  • If you've had it repaired already, you can kiss goodbye any claim you would have had. The process is to allow the original retailer the opportunity to repair, so you've kind of shot yourself in the foot.
  • Beko are cheap though you never get quality with there products. Sorry I know it doesn't help you but I wouldn't touch there stuff.
