That is a sign of a nail that needs oil (well, they all do, but this type is in particular need!).
My personal preference is solar oil. It may seem more expensive that a little bottle of whatever the local chemist sells, but it is worth every penny. It's like a little miracle in a bottle. It will also take care of the pterygium that you have on your middle finger, which will be painful if you don't sort it out.
I'd recommend that you oil at LEAST twice a day and more when you remember it.
The basics of nail care are what we call 'care, condition, coat'. So, care for them - as you are doing by wearing gloves and keeping them nicely filed; condition them with the solar oil and (if you can stretch to it) some of the CND cuticle eraser - it's like the shampoo and conditioner of the nail world. The AHA remover gently sloughs off the dead cuticle from the nail plate and the solar oil replaces and conditions the plate; and coat - keeping them coated keeps them protected. There is no need to worry about nails 'breathing', or having a rest. It's actually better for them to be covered.
I hope that helps a little
Helps a lot, thanks. Now, I saw a post on ridged nails....
That was me too! Although on behalf of my Mum.Again, I find CND ridge out to be more than adequate for most people. Perhaps two coats of that and a topcoat if she doesn't want to have colour on all the time.
Thank you!!
Right. Got myself a shopping list, and remembered I have a £20 Amazon voucher from when I joined Lovefilm... :-)0 -
Thanks for the advice and info. I've not had much luck with oil in the past but have ordered a little bottle from ebay and will give it a go. Only £2.50 so not too painful to trial it.
CND cuticle remover - there seems to be two options, a blue tube and a bigger white bottle - are they both equally good or is one better? They are both a bit steep so I'm loath to just order and wing it!
The white bottle is the one I use in the salon, its amazing for removing cuticle with a pushie and curette. I've have my bottle for six years - seriously! It's a pro product and you must ALWAYS wash you hands after using it to deactivate the active ingredients else they'll continue to keep 'eating' the skin. I sometimes use it effectively on callused areas as well.
However, the one designed for use with the solar oil is the blue one. It helps slough off the dead skin and shouldn't be washed off. Just use a tiny dot and massage in well, then use your solar oil directly on top. It's like a mega-moisture pack for your cuticles. I'd use it twice a day for a few days and then drop to once a day, using your solar oil alone at other times. It's probably going to be better value to buy the bigger bottle.0 -
Well nails night tonight, I've now got some ideas about what to do with our red theme.....0

Well, I had some right superdrug bargains, so updated my blog to reflect this.

Well I tried the whole newspaper print on polish technique, it didn't go well, I must be doing something wrong, it seemed to be so faint and the alcohol seems to affect the polish and make it patchyI might try again in the future, but after several failed attempts am a bit disheartened!
Me too. Tried all sorts and it was just too faint. Even tried it on OH's nails and it didnt work. lol. even tried straight onto the nail with no varnish and it still was too faint.0 -
Just thinking about the challenge does anyone want me to set up a flickr group?
Hmmmmm Red. Now what to do?0 -
Total disaster. Both my left pointed and right middle nail have torn off!
Middle finger had been fixed but I caught it in my hair and it yanked right off.
Left hand had a little tear that I was about to fix but bent it backwards when typing too fast. Oweeeee!
Both to the skin as well. So sore nowNoli nothis permittere te terere

Here's mine: OPI 25 Colourful Years, accent Barry M Red Glitter. Apologies for the (lack of) cleanup, I'm not good with Q-tips! I usually just slather my cuticles with Lush c.butter, then rub any remaining polish from the skin in the shower.Cogito, ergo sum.0
