I'm new to the polish world but am loving reading all this. I currently have gel nails (the home kit from boots) as I'm trying to break a nail biting habit.Wearing bright pink on my nails today :)

  • I kinda accidentally may have ordered 7 new nail polishes from Make Up Academy last night. In my defence they had a promotion on, spend £10 and get a free eye shadow palette worth £8.

Some fabulous nails in this thread.

I STILL have the cinnamon glitter on mine ( over 3 weeks now). Other than it is growing out, it still looks fine with no chips! I am very bored with it but haven't had time to do anything about it.

Once my exam on Wednesday is over I will be playing with the microbeads so watch this space :D

I was in Sainsbury's at lunchtime and they now seem to be stocking Candy girl ( think it was girl - certainly candy anyway) polishes. Anyone tried them?

Mally Beauty has a new gel nails set out on QVC USA.. looks pretty good! A bit pricey though.. even on easy pay. I wonder if we'll get it here in the UK... there is a video demo and on screen presentation as well..

I had them for a while - they are certainly tough and nail polish stays on for weeks at a time.

I stopped for a couple of reasons. I'm not happy about the UV needed to set them - there are cases of skin cancer attributed to nail lamps and even if the cancer risk is remote, there is certainly the skin ageing aspect of UV exposure to consider. Hands show the ageing process far too much without making it worse! I'm leary of shellac for much the same reason although I do have it occasionally and I do use a UV top coat at times.

Gel is also damaging to the nails - often it needs to be filed off. My nail tech was very good but some use electric files and the risk of taking some of the natural nail off is the very high. Mine were fine but I've heard some real horror stories.

I tried gel nails for a while last summer, lovely manicurist/beautician who I have known for years, was very gentle taking them off, but I personally would never risk it with anyone I did not know did it properly, also, in spite of using lots of oil, my nails were in a very poor condition afterwards (maybe just my nail type of course) BUT they did look amazing, I will probably have them done for my Sis's wedding in July, assuming I can find someone good to do them, about 8 beauty salons to choose, only tried one yet for a mani, but won't be going back!
