Eden Project and Cornwall

  • I went to the Eden Project last summer when I went camping in cornwall and personally, I thought it was brilliant.

Ended up spending the entire day there, had some nice organic and healthy food in their restaurant (although the fat people weren't too happy that they didn't serve burger and chips but each to their own).

It was quite cold when I went so by the time I walked into the tropical bio-dome I was amazed as it was boiling in there and felt like I had literally teleported to the tropics!

You can go round the Eden Project on Google StreetView, if you want to check it out before you go. Just hover the man over the site on the map (at postcode PL24 2SG) and it shows up blue (doesn't look as if you can view it until you do this i.e. there's no 'roads' on the map).

This goes for many tourist attractions now - London Zoo, some RHS gardens, Tatton Park in Cheshire, Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire etc.

We have family in Cornwall and try to go 2 / 3 times a year. We always visit Newquay zoo and the aquarium as they are a great day out. Instead of Eden, I would recommend the Lost Gardens of Helligan, as our children enjoyed it much more.

  • How about cycling along the Camel trail? We took our own bikes but as youngest was only three, we hired one of the enclosed trailers for him. I found you didn't have to be a brilliant rider to manage it (believe me I'm not!)
  • Another vote for Lost Gardens of Heligan (LGOH) from me. Personally I and my family were disappointed with the Eden project but it was over 5 years ago when we went.

Just think it's way too expensive for what it is.

LGOH sometimes have events on which mean you can fill a whole day.

Also some lovely beaches all along the west coast. We also enjoy Tintagel and Boscastle.

I agree with that. We went about 2 years ago and whilst it was interesting I didn't think it was worth the £20 a ticket we paid to get in. It was also packed. There were so many people filing along the paths in the domes that stopping to look at anything was difficult at best, and we were there on a weekday in October. I can only imagine what it is like at the weekend or during school holidays.

Favourite thing we saw in Cornwall was The Japanese Garden in St. Mawgan which was beautiful. It's probably not somewhere kids would like though.

Tintagel Castle is probably worth a visit as well.

Yes I agree Eden Project is expensive. Tintagel Castle is amazing, fantastic views but the pubs were a disgrace.

The camel trail is great, even if its just from Wadebridge to Padstow (the flat bit)

Order a past copy of Gardeners’ World Magazine, (May 2011 edition), that includes a 2 for 1 discount card on over 260 gardens around the UK, (including the Eden Project) & is valid until 30 April 2012, (some restrictions on use).

hi, do you know if this includes the lost gardens of helligan also? thanks (i don't want to go to eden project just helligan)

I stay in Cornwall a few times a year, and I really think it is one of the best places for a holiday! When I'm there I usually spend my time going for walks, going to the local pub (Generally the wellington and the cobweb in Boscastle), going to the beach, visiitng national trust and english heritage sites, and last time I did go to the Eden Project too. It is a bit pricey, but I suppose if you didn't manage to find vouchers, the good thing about it is that the pass lasts for a year.
