About a year ago, I bought a second-hand car from a dealer in my area. I paid for the majority of it on a credit card, and a small amount of cash.
The credit was paid back over a couple of months, and the car is mine with no outstanding credit. However, no sooner do I tax it for 6 months, when the head gasket goes on it!
If it was a running car, it'd probably be worth about £1000, maybe a little more. As a dead car, I'll probably get £200 - £300 for it. I'm not able to fix the problem myself, and so I'd expect a garage to want £700+ for repairing it.
It really is quite a nice car, leather seats, fully electric, etc., and I'd love to repair it, but I think/thought that I'm just about ready to put it on ebay as a spares or repairs, but then I realised that I may be able to get something back from the credit card company!
What do you think my chances are? Like I say, it's been about a year.

No. You bought a banger over a year and now its broke. Why on gods earth would a credit card company refund money?0

Thanks for your constructive advice, copa feela.
Jumperjohn - erm, thanks for your input.0

My input is correct. You have 6 months statuary cover from the dealer. Just think about it. Why would a cc company give you money back you spent on an old car. I know reading positive replies give you hope but its false hope. Please ring your cc company and report back.0

I doubt you could claim for it to be honest.
Shop around for garage quotes to fix it though, £700 sounds quite steep.
When mine went on my car they managed to get away with just skimming the head gasket, and changing the radiator which cost a lot less and it lasted for another year after that. I don't know what happened then as I sold it!0

This is good advice. Maybe sell this one and buy another cheap car, there are lots for sale.0

            Was it a Rover ?0

if you like the car, and everything else is ok, slap a new head gasket on there. some of these jobs are a damm sight easier than you think. and won't cost you much for a sensible spanner man if your not confident or capable.0

Why on earth would they accept a claim?
See if you can get it repaired cheaper, or if not, sell for spares and buy a cheaper car0

I know your input is correct, JumperJohn. I am not looking for positive responses to latch on to. I was offended by the tone of your response - a bit like the other one on this page from DaveBoy. I didn't know the rules about the time period where I could have made a claim.0
