CPW o2, need to cancel contract

Have done a search but nothing that really answers my question, sorry.

I extended my contract with cpw o2 about 8 months ago, have 10 months left on contract but really cant afford to pay for the phone any longer. Am only on £25 pm but am trying to dump all, seriously all, non essentials.
Never had to do anything like this before, has anyone done it and can talk me through it or does anyone have any insight into likely procedures?

The redemption penalties will be high.

Ask about downgrading your contract to the cheapest package. I plan to do this with my unwanted Vodaphone contract so I can afford to run another contract with O2 alongside.

If you cancel, they will generally ask for the remaining months to be paid up and may also ask for the costs of any handset at full rrp (therefore little point in cancelling as you are then paying for it and won't get the use of the minutes/texts, plus get penalised for the cost of the handset). You signed a contract and they will expect you to honour it.

Depending on which version of the t&cs you are on, and if I have understood correctly, you can downgrade one level at a time to the next lowest level (but cannot drop immediately to the lowest tariff), though when you can start doing this will depend on the contract.
