Seller wants cash on delivery for large item purchased on eBay...

Hi,

I've bought a large item off eBay and the seller wants cash on delivery. The listing displays paypal as the payment option however in the description it reads: CASH ON COLLECTION ONLY (DON'T PAY THROUGH PAY PAL)

I was intially fine with this but with further thought I'm now aprehensive and was just wondering where I stand should there be any issues. The seller does not accept returns and I am concerned that if the item is deemed not to match description or be stolen I won't have a leg to stand on. I presume if I paid via paypal I'd be protected for these scenarios.

Should I be worrying?

Thanks in advance.

A seller must offer Paypal (with the exception of a couple of categories, such as cars).

You will have NO comeback with COD. Pay by paypal and act ignorant.
  • If I was the seller and you were collecting then I would want cash. You will have the opportunity to check that the item is as described before paying. Sellers have been scammed by buyers collecting and then claiming non receipt cause the seller has no proof of delivery.

Sellers are advised (not by eBay or paypal as this would lose them money) not to accept paypal for collection items.
Inspect the item when you go to collect it and if it is not as described then don't pay for it.

EDIT: Above post wasn't there when I started typing :)

Unless you two read a different OP, the buyer is paying for cash on DELIVERY, not collection. But the seller obviously wants cash on COLLECTION. Op I suspect there may be an issue here with what the listing says.
  • Just to be clear. The seller wants me to pay cash for the item when I pick it up. If it doesn't meet the description I wont buy it. However, in the case if its stolen etc. where do I stand paying cashing when I collect?

Well cash on collection is nothing like cash on delivery. My first post still stands in so much as a seller must accept paypal, however as the other two posters state, on here we would advise a seller to only accept cash on collection.

What is the problem with going and inspecting the item? Why would you think it may be stolen? Can you give us a rough idea of what type of item it is?

Thought perhaps the buyer had got a leetle bit confused about delivery/collection:cool:

And I thought he had perhaps arranged with the seller to send a courier but COD. :D
  • I have been caught out paying cash on collection. When I got the item home, it was faulty and not as described. the seller refused me a refund and e bay would not intervene as we did not go through Paypal, we were not subject to their Buyer protection scheme. The only remaining option for us is a small claims application.
  • If i was a seller and you collected the item from me, and paid by paypal, there is nothing to stop you then claiming the item had not been delivered as the seller would obviously not have a tracking number, or proof of postage. Unfortunatly this is a common scam, to then reclaim the money from paypal, everything i sell cash on collection, i will not even entertain a paypal transaction.
