Cars with no lights

What is it with people and car lights??
Driving into work this am, I had full lights on as while it wasn't fully dark it was dark enough to have at the very least side lights on!, I flashed loads of drivers who didn't have any lights on at all! Not only are they hard to see as it was still a little foggy but they have no dash lights so are blissfully unaware of what speed they are doing!
It's the same when I drive home, while it's not fully dark, I have full lights on, yet some numpties feel the need to drive around lightless expecting the rest of us to use the force to try and see them!
Common sense prevails I feel! It's dark, put your lights on!

Stupid people are everywhere sadly. The amount of morons who live around where I do is unreal - no lights, driving around with fog lights on despite it being clear, not indicating etc etc.
They all seem to come out at the weekend, so I try and stay inside then!0 -

When has this ever been the case? Simply there isnt a good enough guideline to tell drivers when they should have lights on. E.g. you try and find when your supposed to use your fog lights. there is very few clear guidelines in when you should use them. and seeing as the punishment for misuse is 3 pts, there definately should be a stricter guidelines.
When people have normal vision (can see past 50 or so yards) they normally leave there lights off as they simply dont think they need them. I Have very good vision but really struggle driving at night with people lights glaring and temporarily blinding me, alot of the time i think i would be able to see better with out headlights and just street lighting and brake lights. If a car is 10 yds behind you with lights on you literally cannot see anything out the back of your car.
Before i get too slated i do have perfect vision had eye tests 3 mths ago, just healights are too damn bright!!0 -
Plenty of people have their lights on when it isn't necessary. If the street lights are not lit, then it's not necessary to have your lights on.
Lots of drivers appear to be like sheepdogs and work on the basis that if that car his lights on, it must be dark so I'll put mine on too, when in fact it isn't dark!I am employed as a manager in a financial services institution. My views are entirely my own.0 -
One of my pet hates people who drive with no lights, but in a built up area with good street lighting and lots of traffic, are the people who drive with headlights. And don't even get me started on the idiots with rear fog lights when it's clear.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

So because you felt the need to put your lights on you decided that was a good enough excuse to flash anyone that didn't have lights on. Did it at any point occur to you that your version of common sense was momentarily blinding other road users?0 -

And the alternative being others will have a limited vision of the particular road user in question.
What happens if somebody is pulling out onto a 60 road and because of the fact it's dark and a car has no lights on, they are unable to see the vehicle had they would if they had lights on, pull out and cause a collition0 -

This.
The worst situation is where you have a stream of traffic using dipped beam and one vehicle in that stream driving on side lights.
It's very easy to perceive that as a gap in the stream.
Obviously you should see the dimly lit vehicle as the 'gap' approaches but there's always the possibility that someone's attention may be distracted - possibly checking a difficult view in the other direction - and a collision may result. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
The OP mentions 'loads' of drivers without lights on. Usually if it's dark you get the odd car which would imply it was just the OP's perception it was too dark to drive without lights and not the loads of other road users who I'm guessing are just as qualified as the OP on how to judge when lights are needed.0

My previous car was a Fiat and the lights were linked to the ignition. This meant that I could leave my lights permanently on, knowing that they would be switched off and on when the ignition was switched off and on. This meant that I didn't have to remember to switch them on.
The latest car of a few months is a Ford, and that only bleeps at me when I open the driver's door with the lights on. I still have to remember to switch the lights on in the first place - and it's too easy to forget.
Highway code aside, I don't mind being flashed as a reminder.

Cobblers. Whether to turn your lights on or not should be based on the driving conditions at the time, not on whether the street lights are on.
I've driven on plenty of occasions when it's been dark, overcast, sometimes wet, and it has been necessary to have lights on despite the street lights not being on and it being in the middle of the day.No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0
