Migrating to a new Broadband provider

Hi,
I have received my MAC from my current provider and have signed up to Sky.
My account will cease on the 9th March.
Is it fair of my current provider to charge £21.28 +vat for leaving?
They have told me that this is normal practice even though they did not make me aware of this when I requested my MAC and cancelled my account.
I only noticed this after getting my monthly email bill.
Thanks

Many thasnks for the reply.
I just rang Utv Internet (my current provider).
The operator told me that it does state at the bottom of their web page that a charge would incur for leaving and it is their standard policy.
I did quote from the above link.
He replied by saying that I would need to put in a complaint and someone would get back to me but he could not do anything about it.0 -
Hey Studiodemon,
I've not yet heard of that ISP so I did a bit of research.
It looks like they're based in Ireland. On their website it does state that if you leave prior to completing a 12 month contract that there is a £25 charge (it looks like connection fees are paid up front).
If you go to: http://u.tv/internet/services/Clicksilverni/clicksilverHome.asp and scroll down to the bottom of the UK it's all there.
For clarity, the new OFCOM ruling that has come into effect on 14 Feb 2007 means that ISPs cannot charge for MACs, however the consumer is still responsible for covering the cost of any outstanding fees for their services or any early cancellation charges. Please don't get caught out by this.
Kind regards,

Thanks again,
I have been with UTV for 3 years and have been out of contract for 2yrs.
This is the bill I reeived today.
Advance Subscription Period : 27 February 2007 - 26 March 2007
My account will cease on the 9th March
Tariff: Clicksilver Home 500
Call Charges: £11.97
Advance Subscription Charge: £21.27
Extra Charge(s) : £21.28
Amount: £54.51 ex VAT
VAT: £9.54
Total charged: £64.05 inc VAT
Does the new ruling not apply here?
Or can they just call it something else i.e admin charge?
Thanks0 -
I signed up with Tesco on Anytime dial up while I am waiting for Sky Broadband to come on line. Obviously when I receive the wireless router and have broadband I will no longer need the Tesco dial up package. But they want to charge me for the full 12 months. As with the Bank Charges issue that Martin has helped out with, do they have a legal right to expect this charge for "pushing a button" to cancel my Anytime account?0

Well yeah, you've committed yourself to a 12 month contract, if you wanted to get out early then you'd have to pay out the rest of the remaining contract!0
