What is the most practical & lasting solution for hallway flooring?

My aged carpet in the hallway - both upstairs & downstairs needs replacing.
I live in a long terraced house so there are no windows & the hallway is relatively dark.
What it the most practical solution for flooring? I don't mind either carpets or laminate but I want something that is warm & hardwearing as the hallway is the busiest area of the house with people walking in/out & with dirty shoes.
I would like to brighten up the hallway so a dark carpet would not be very good at that. I like the look of parquet flooring but I am afraid it will get damaged easily by high heels.
What do other people have?

Kardean is a nice floor. Its hard though, not warm as its a vinyl, but its easy to maintain and looks great.
I have nothing better to do!!!!

I'm not sure that laminate or carpet are particularly good in a hall, unless you have *very* good doormats. Both, but laminate more obviously, can be damaged by grit brought in on shoes.
Although I love wood I always prefer a hard floor downstairs, so stone or tiles. I have encaustic tiles in my hall, but ceramic or quarry tiles are also good (though quarry may be a bit dark for you)? You could then have a carpet going up the stairs & landing.0 -

How much is that (approx)? Is it the stuff like Amtico?0 -
It sells from about £35 square meter depending on where you live I supose, got it here in Leicester for approx £45sq mtr and that included the latexing of the floor, and yes similar in looks and design to Amtico , but not as dear

Karndean is brilliant stuff...we had the Knight Tile in our last house which is a cheaper range and it was very hardwearing. We have two dogs and it stood up to the challenge!! We are just about to get the Da Vinci range down in our new house. I think Karndean is warm underfoot and it is waterproof, fairly scratch resistant and has a range of stunning designs (no, I don't work for Karndean or sell it!!!).
One thing I will add is that you can purchase the product much cheaper on the Internet as you know (Completely Flooring) and there are people out there who do lay Karndean for half the price a normal retailer would charge. We were quoted £1600 from a retailer to supply and lay the Da Vinci woodplank in our dining room and conservatory and we have just been quoted £800 from a guy who was recommended to us by one of our friends. It is definately worth asking around to see if anyone knows anybody who lays Karndean!
Hope this has helped...............0 -
We had a dark brown and orange 70's flower power carpet in the hall/stairs/landing, with matching flower power wallpaper and dark wood ranch style bannisters that I inherited when I moved in. It was always dark and dingy in the hall.
We decorated last year and replaced the bannisters with wood spindles, that I've left in their natural pine colour by just painting them with clear varnish. The wood has beautiful patterns in it, and it seemed a shame to paint over them! We've put a light beige coloured wallpaper up, a pine laminate in the hall and a biscuit coloured carpet on the stairs and landing. I've hung a huge mirror on the hall wall which reflects in light from the front door.
The difference is absolutely amazing. It looks much brighter and fresher out there, and oddly it looks twice the size as well!
We've got two mucky boys and two muddly collies, so the laminate works better than carpet as I can just give it a quick wipe with a mop to keep it clean too! Here I go again on my own....0 -
