It's likely smartphones will reach some sort of plateau soon for most.

Home computers were 'powerful enough' 7 or 8 years ago, and now most people buy a computer with slightly better specifications when the old one breaks, rather than continually upgrading.

I own an HTC Desire which I am giving up and was given an Iphone 3GS.

The Iphone from 3GS onwards beats the HTC hands down in terms of ease of use-faults and complaints not withstanding is IMHO much better value for money because of range of multifunctional Apps, rendering one's phone customisable to one's preferred use.

Ok then :rotfl: iPhones always have been and always will be outdated before they
    are even released.

Christ you got features on £10 phones that you didn't even get on the early iphones.

But I do agree with the op, I think 'smartphones' have reached their pinnacle at this
moment in time, nothing that's being released at the moment is really that groundbreaking.

I got the HTC desire when it first come out, and at that time for many people it was
their first smartphone, and was a massive massive upgrade to what people had previously.

But ive recently upgraded to a sensation XE, an all round much better phone, that's
costing me £4pm less than the desire contract ive just cancelled.

I don't think most people 'upgrade' to get an upgrade to their handsets, I think most just
do it because they can do it. people are used to getting a new phone every couple of years,
people are used to paying out the £20+ or more a month for it, people are used to paying
for their shiny new toy in installments throughout their contracts, ask most if they would
prefer to shell out £300 for a phone and go with say giffgaff at £10 a month and most will say
no, because for most shelling out £300 is a lot when what they have is probably fine to use,
even though when compared together the costs are similar over the 2 years.

So I would say its the ability to get the new phone, not what the new phones does better
than the previous phone that makes people upgrade.

Saying that, my new phone whips my old phones behind, looking at them side by side I don't
even know why I liked the desire, let alone kept it for early 2 years :)

And the same can be said for HTC, Sony, Mororola, there is always something new coming along next week/month/quarter. Only real difference is Apple use a yearly release cycle so it seems more to catch up, but in realsity most people have a 18-24 month contract so see a bigger difference.

If you had the Desire and went to the Desire HD in the midddle it would not seem such a jump.

End of the day it's not about "need" its about "want", we all want a new better toy to play with every so often, regardless of what it can do better, we jsut want something new.
  • When I upgraded to a smartphone my monthly payment went from £27.50 to £22.50 and I got double mins, treble txts and 500 Mb internet . Has anyone ever had an apple upgrade with a reduction in monthly tarrif ?
  • Something that the Galaxy S2 has over the HTC is the internal memory, a whopping 16gb!

I know all too well of the problems a small amount of memory causes as my last phone was a Satio with 64mb!

Perhaps my choice of word -perfect was not "perfect" but my point being that for 99% of people I think the lastest superphone is far beyond their needs, take dual core and the upcoming quadcore phones, surely unless you are using them for high end games, do they really offer any benefit?
    .

Well its easy to have an "i'm all right jack" attitude but you'll find the latest smartphones even do the basic things better than their predecessors. For example i had an iphone 4 and i thought website browsing couldn't get better, however after buying an iphone 4S (gave the iphone 4 to missus cos she was fed up with her Google Nexus), i can honestly say that browsing is faster on the 4S...probably due to the faster processor. Now i didn't buy the 4S just because it was the 'cool' thing to do (actually i hate Apple Macs with a passion), i simply bought it because the other half wanted my iphone 4. Will i upgrade to the next iphone? Very unlikely, unless its a major step up from the 4S.

People will always upgrade mobile phones mainly because it is with you and you can show off to others.
It's in all of us regard less of what others may say. Only need to look at other products, many don't buy a car to take them a to b also like showing off other wise most will buy the cheapest car to use.

If mobile phones have reached being perfect its good for apple, managed to reach top spot with one new device at any one time. The Samsung, htc etc needed to release 100's to get market share similar to apple.
  • I wouldn't buy the latest smartphone just because, i'd buy it because it served a purpose so the Galaxy Note is perfect for me. Can't see me getting another phone for a few years now. Do think that some buy in to the smartphone thing because they think it's the thing to have, take the poster above, iPhone this and iPhone that when like many many others time spent using the functions they have to offer are not used that often. It's a cool thing to take out of your pocket.

I would suggest that only a handful of people can say why they have a smartphone and why they need one.

You don't need to use all functions, the reason you buy one is because when you do want to use certain function make sure it's there. That's why most people like a lot of functions. When you buy the phone you may not be using it for email but in six months you may want. You want be happy if you find out it can't do that and you are not due for upgrade for 18 months. Like everything you always get some people who go on about I don't need this and that, most like to use functions like Internet on the go, apps etc.

Rather than buying a Galaxy Note might as well carry a laptop with a mobile sim so you can make calls and also have two use in one, main computer at home and a mobile phone when outside.
