Been quoted a boiler from British Gas (£2,900)!!!!

Hi there,

Have been quoted £2990 for a boiler from British Gas, but have dones some research and I think I've found a few that are a LOT cheaper than that. The only problem is, that I am a first time buyer and no nothing about the quality of these so could somebody with a little more knowledge give me some idea as to whether the attached boiler would be any good?

We are only in a small 3 bedroom flat?

Cheers

  • Hi,

British Gas are expensive - simply becauase they can afford to be with their brand name.
If you can find a good local plumber, things will drop in price a lot.
BG quoted us 5k for a new Worcester Bosch combi, including removing the old boiler, relocating the new one, adding thermostats to all rads, power flushing the system, etc.
Friendly local chappy did all this for 3k.

Prices will get cheaper as you head north, ;-)

Just make sure anyone involved in fitting is CORGI registered.

    Hi Goonernumber1

Dont go with BG - paying for the name and they exploit that !!
    Have a look at

I have fitted Worcester Bosch Greenstar 28si juniors on my last 2 projects and they are top notch. The latest is running 9 rads with a room thermostat and very warm it is too. It also feeds a shower panel.

Once you have ordered the boiler get a few plumbers (recommendations by word of mouth are best) to quote for labour to fit, flush & test system.

    Hope this helps.

Agree with this. We have a 30si, and it's great.

2 days one man, to install a new condenser combi boiler. (and remove old stuff).

approx 4 days for a full system.

combi boilers are about £500 to 1k now. get a quote from a local to fit it. 3 quotes if poss.
worcester and vailliant combis are very good.

BG is an absolute rip off, they quoted a lady we know, 3 grand to change hers.
    Get some gorm.
  • H have just had a new cobi boiler fitted. It took one and a half days. The boiler cost £500 and fitting cost £300. MY rads were flushed through and I had heat conrol valves put on too (£50 quid extra) so a total of £850.
A great job and all working well. all the creaks and groans have gon from the bedroom rads too.

British gas quoted me £3335 but after a winter discount.... £3035 woopeee.
and if I paid for it over 8 years on their easy pay plan i could pay about 5k lucky me!!

    well worth shopping round locally
  • Go to the local Plumb Centre and ask their advice. Their counter assistants are usually very helpful. My local assistant told me that Vaillant boilers are the most reliable. A guide is to look at the brands that they sell, as they can't afford a lot of come-back from their clients, who are mainly professionals.

Personally I wouldn't buy a Potterton (once bitten twice shy), also as they seem to have a huge amount of repair vans on the road.

Getting a plumber or gas fitter is tricky and personal recommendation is the best. Due to British Gas' new ways of working - ie their fitters will all try and sell you everything that they can - try and find an older ex-BG fitter with their own business - as their training was very good. Corgi registered. Get at least 2 quotes. Use the Corgi website for names in your area if stuck.
  • Just been quoted £2,950, looking at buying the equiptment and getting someone to fit it. BUT what is the difference between a condensing and a non-condensing combi boiler?

a condensing boiler uses the waste heat, (that normally goes up the flue) to heat the next bit of cold water via a heat exchanger.
this make the boiler very efficient, typically 90%.
and of course that means smaller fuel bills.

so the extra costs of a condensing boiler can pay for itself in no time.
soon these will be the only boilers allowed.
    Get some gorm.
