First gas bill received. Help!

Hi there,

I have just received my first gas bill from npower and it seems rather high!

Heres a breakdown;

20/09/2011 - 274

13/01/2012 - 1010 (estimate)

736 = 8237 kWh

First 2406 at 8.206p = £197.44
next 5831 at 2.971p = £173.24

I took a meter reading on 4/2/2012 which came to 1546

Would it be worth querying the bill with npower on the rates they are charging me? £370 just seems a bit excessive as I only live in a one bedroom flat

Thank for your helpn :)

    These readings don't make sense to me, one is an estimate which you should never allow to happen IMHO.

    What tarrif are you on?

    You may be paying one of their highest rates - not on a cheaper tariff or direct debit. I suspect that that might be something to do with the actual cost.

    However, the actual usage does seem high. Over the last month I've used about 450kWh per week in a 3-bed semi.

    What sort of heating have you got? Are you leaving a hot water tank 'on' all the time?

    Is this you first home with central heating?

    A better question than the cost is whether an average of 100kWhrs/day over the (actual) bill period is excessive. It's a bit above what would considered "average" but well within the capability of a central heating boiler. You need to explain how warm you keep the flat and/or how well (or badly) it is insulated. Get a handle on your gas consumption by taking daily readings for a week.

    Have you got a Metric meter or an Imperial meter?

    If its a metric meter, with a big M3 on it, and npower think its imperial 100s cuft, look at the bill conversion, you will have a bill 3 times greater than it should be.

    "736 = 8237 kWh" answers that question on the conversion. An Imperial meter on that calculation would underbill.
  • I have a mertric gas meter

    Could that be the confusion?

    You have more bad news because the actual reading of 1546 you took in Feb is 536 metric units more than the estimate of 1010 they billed you to. That means there is about another 6000kwh that have not been billed yet:eek:.
    This means that from September you have used more than 14000kwh of gas, which is approaching the national average for 1 years use.

    Tell us more about the initial reading of 274, did you take that reading and submit it to Npower, are you certain that it is a correct reading. It is quite a low reading so had the meter been changed shortly before.

    To get your current usage you could take daily readings for a while, but I would say thta the problem relates to the initial reading.
