I have ordered another Panasonic with a HDD, but please do tell me what is a PVR??

A personal video recorder is just like a DVD drive but replaces DVDs with disk drives, USB flash drives, SD memory cards or other local or networked mass storage devices.

The best ones on the market tend to be Humax especially one of the best machines in its class, the Humax HDR-FOX T2 or the bullet-proof, affordable, highly effective and good value Humax PVR9300T

A PVR is basically a hard drive with two internal tuners.

Perhaps that is what I have bought then because it does have as hard drive.

    This is the model:

Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

That is a hard drive recorder and a DVD recorder combined. It only has a singe tuner according to the specs, so not a PVR by my definition.
And a very small hard drive compared to the dedicated PVR's, which are normally upwards of 320Gb.
And more expensive than a budget PVR.

The current ones will usually be 320GB or 500GB.

Panasonic DVD Recorders have a weak spot of some capacitors that go after a few years. The symptoms are that you can't receive the digital signal. It is repairable though.

My Panasonic DVD recorder lasted about 4 years then the timer started to play up,bought another Panasonic to replace it in 2008 , then I discovered the Humax Pvr 9300 T with 350 gig HDD, a much better system. The Panasonic is now relegated to the bedroom were it is used mainly as a player. Intresting hearing about the dodgy caps though.

Useful link that, that often solves the problem, except with my DMRES10 unfortunately.

My DVD recorder for my more than 3 year old laptop is still fine.
It not only depends on the time.
