All the talk is of funds, but with £300k why not just buy shares directly?

You can for part of your portfolio, but you won't get a good geographic or market cap spread.

It's also a younger man's game. As my faculties ebb, I intend to keep making my investments simpler and simpler, and could even end up with annuities if it goes too far!

Are you not `losing` the value of your assets thro` inflation?

I believe that said approach has been tested both by one or two lottery winners and a few labour government. The results weren't pretty.

Yes but the `labour governments` didn`t have money, they simply borrowed it and hissed it up the wall.

Socialism is as socialism does. Even after it's crashed and burned, and nearly taken Europe and the ROW with it, some will still nail their colours to its mast.

    Sad but true.

Not to get all political, but since when has Labour been socialist? New Labour are just Tories with red rosettes and prettier smiles.

And a penchant for spending money like it's going out of fashion!

But I agree about not getting political as they are all quite capable of some catastrophic decisions and policies from time to time.

    They are, true.

But to be pedantic about things, socialism by definition is the economic system where workers own the means of production. John Lewis, the Co-op and Mondragon are all to a greater or lesser extent run on socialist principles. No British government, Labour or Tory, has attempted to run the economy on socialist principles since the 70s. It's a very American thing to blame the recent economic disasters on 'socialism' but it couldn't be further from the truth.

And for that we should be be deeply grateful.

I remember the 70s, and if we're ever taken back to those days, I'm going to buy shares in candle makers.

Some good funds in there, but if you really need the 10k income, I'd personally look at sticking a cheap rental flat or house in there to.

Housing market may be overvalued, but the income is regular and rents are on the up.

If the stock market falls 10% (hardly an unlikely prospect at the moment!), you're really going to need to leave your divs in to cover the losses - taking income out will just compound the problem, if the housing market falls by 10% your income will probably remain largely intact, and the price will come back in the long run.

Just my tuppenies worth... I can't claim to be warren buffet.

Regardless, for the funds I'd go with drip feeding it - with the ftse nigh on 6k my own guess is that there may be better value to be had in a few months, in particular if the whole europe thing blows up.
