More Than or Animal Friends Pet Insurance ?

Hi

I need to sort out Pet insurance for my three cats. I was with Halifax but they've pulled out of pet insurance. We've been offered a policy with Pet Wise which is alot more expensive.

The policy with Halifax was a lifetime policy.

The two policies I'm considering are

More Than £7,000 per condition no time limit which will cost about £5.85 per annum each.

Animal Friends is £6.35 per annum each for a lifetime policy with a limit of £20000 vets bills each.

I'm tempted on the Animal Friends policy but the reviews on line are dreadful whereas More Than is getting very good reviews generally.

My other concern is that More Than are saying 20% off so does that mean their premiums will go up ridiculously next year ?

Finally one of my cats Tigger did have some vet treatment a couple of years ago which we did claim against. Something bit her tail so it was badly inflamed and infected so she had antibiotics and anti inflamatories. She also had an xray because at one point we thought it might be broken, which it wasn't. To my mind that isn't a pre existing condition its a one off injury but I'm abit worried as to how an insurance company will view it and try and use it as an excuse not to pay out. So I do intend to ring whichever insurance policy I go with to make sure they are aware but has anyone any experience ?

Any comments or feedback on these policies appreciated. Or if you've found a good policy let me know !

Thanks

Jen

I am with More Than for my dog's insurance, but can't really comment on them because I haven't made a claim yet and hope I don't have to. I used to be with Petguard, but like Halifax they abandoned people who had pets with existing conditions, so we are not covered for the most likely thing that will go wrong.

£5.85 per annum sounds exceptionally cheap, I pay £11.85 per month for my dog!

I don't know anything about Animal Friends, but have read some pretty bad reviews about them.

It's like any insurance, you don't know how good or bad it is until you have to make a claim.

  • More Than. Animal Friends seem to be causing us trouble recently and they can be unpredictable in what they pay out. All I want is predictability and More Than are better for that

I have 2 dogs with AFI on their very basic Accident plan which is £4.30 per dog for me so cheap and basic. Havent had to claim uet though so dont know that side thankfully.

Although last year they messed us around a lot with renewal due to them changing underwriters or something.

I am considering switching this year but our 2 dogs are 8 and 9 years now and getting old for most insurer new policies ? I chose AFI initialy as they cover for life and dont cap per year per condition.

As you have cats though I cant really comment but I would say you dont need a fully loaded insurance as their not so likely to be as needy as dogs if you know what I mean? They need simple insurance cats in my opinion.

    HTH :)

  • Don't touch animal friends with a barge pole!!!! I have had "for life" policies with them for more than 7 years. At first we had no problems with them at all but when they were taken over I have had no end of problems. I have to claim on a monthly basis as my dogs have heart conditions and need regular medication. In the end I was having so many problems getting them to pay out I reported them to the financial ombudsman. Suddenly their payments are more regular again but they refused to pay out on one thing even though they had told me on the phone they would pay. Even though my vet said it was life saving etc etc. I don't want to give too many details in case they recognise me from what I say, as my dogs are too elderly for me to be able to go another company. If you want to PM me you can but I would just find another company. I'm sorry to say this, as the reason we went with them in the first place was because they were an ethical company...not sure this is true anymore anyway.

I was with more than for my dog who i recently had PTS.

they don't cover euthanasia costs, but do pay out for death due to illness.

also, they pay out all but 10% of each claim, so when my dog had a condition where the medication cost me £330 per month, they covered all but £33 of it, and i had the monthly premium too, which was £93 per month.

should also say More than are very good on the phone, and very quick for pay outs. They always paid direct to the vet so I didn't have to mess around cashing cheques etc
  • More Th>n are offering £60 cash back through Topcashback for pet insurance at the moment but it ends today.

    Hi

Thankyou All. I think I'll be going with More Than. Pet insurance is such a nightmare as I'm not only after a decent price but also decent cover.

    Thanks

    Surely you mean per month?

But they can and will cap what they class as "reasonable charges" adn quickly add a whopping 35% o payment to animals over eight.
