I think I'm going to have hard coded inserts in each board with the links to the major articles!

Sorry Gal again for encroaching on your board however daily there are new users on the Telephony Boards and most seem to come direct from the email so obviously they are reading the relevant article, just maybe not the forums when they get here?

I posted a Guide to using Home Phones, with all the relevant links to the articles etc, on 3 March and its only had 190 views  Plus I suggested before posting they have a look to see if the subject is already there.

I notice we now have a "thanks" button. How about a "thwack" as well? If someone posts something which has been answered a million times over and has obviously not bothered to read any of the large flashing neon "pay here" type signs then we can quickly and easily a good "thwack" and send them on their way.

    ;)

I love this idea Gal, only the name I had in mind for the button better not be printed here ;)

And just to keep on topic, do I just go and open an account with the Nationwide then a credit card for my holiday in July??

okay...back on topic (sort of ;)):

I have just this morning applied online for a Nationwide CC account to use when I am working in France this summer. I was a little worried that I would get rejected - after all I am only a student and my income works out at about £6500 a year. (Student loan + vacation job earnings + money from parents). I also applied for a Nationwide CC this time last year and was rejected, I think partly because the guy in the branch where I applied made a few mistakes on the form.

Anyway when Nationwide rejected me last year I opened up an Accucard account (with a £500 credit limit and the bonus of 0.8% (now 0.5%) cashback) and I suppose 12 months of payment on time looks good on my credit file. I also opened a Nationwide FlexAccount in January (for withdrawing cash abroad) which may have helped my application. Anyway it turns out that not only was I accepted but I have a limit of £1500! :D Which considering I don't have any regular employment is quite cool (but I can see how people with poorer financial management than myself could get into serious debt trouble).

Also, on the question of which of the 3 Nationwide CCs to choose (Classic, Cashback or Comic Relief) I actually chose the Comic Relief card (which I think in this case is a rare exception to Martin's advice against using Charity cards). As I don't want a 0% offer and I clear the balance in full each month there's no point going for the Classic card. But as I will only be using the card abroad, there's no advantage to the Cashback card (cashback is not paid on purchases abroad, and the interest free period is 46 days not 56). The Comic Relief card pays 0.5% to Comic Relief (even, as far as I can tell, for purchases made abroad), and I will also benefit from the longer interest free period (and of course the whole point of the exercise, no exchange rate loading). So it's winners all round with this card.

I think Nationwide are one of the few who can see sense that students aren't really actually a hugh risk as customers if they have good credit history... I have managed to get a debit and credit card from them... which after having had the card for about 18 months now has quite a silly limit given I have no job. They know I have no job, as i've never told them any different!

If you think about it, if someone with a £40,000 a year income and so £10,000+ credit limit looses their job; surely they are more of a risk as a customer than a student who has NO job at all? A student must be less risk as they have nothing/less to lose. So I like the way Nationwide doesn't accept applications purely based on income... and I know quite a few people who have been rejected even though they have large incomes.
