Hi thanks for the reply mgdavid..
I see on the V5 form they only ask the date and don't appear to ask any other questions?
As the car has been in Holland since August, should I back date the date require or just place the current date..
Thanks0 -

It doesn't really matter; you could have been commuting back to UK in it every week or so, it only became 'exported' when it got into a state where it cannot be driven back here, so if it were me I would put the current date. There is no check with port authorities or anything like that. I suppose this is a benefit of the 'free movement' within the EU.The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
So the weekend I put my dear Mondeo to rest at the scrap yard.
Rather upsetting since it was stuck in Holland..
Anyway I obtained proof of scrapping and now will send off the car tax for a refund.
My question is that how do DVLA return the funds to me since I see no information on the form of any bank details that can be filled in?
Thank you..0 -

A cheque is posted to the registered keeper's UK address as on the V5C.
Takes a couple of weeks though.0 -
Hello Davev123,
I am dealing with the same issue as you were before: i brought over an English car to the Netherlands and now wish to scrap it in the NL.
I would very much like to know:
1. did you already receive a confirmation that you have been removed from DVLA records or that your car is exported? I have read that one needs to actually fill in a different form called V5C-1 when a car is already abroad, they might see it too because your are sending off the form from abroad?
2. Did you send the paper that proves you "scrapped your car in the Netherlands" to the insurance company in the UK and did they require to know more than that or not...what did you tell them?
I am still paying high monthly premiums for the car and need to scrap it asap, please let me know your progress. Thanks!0 -
Hello again, this is what i found on google, please advice the best thing to do, i dont want to make things even more complicated:
If you’ve already left the UK, You’ll need to get a *V561 certificate of permanent export**. Apply for one using ... The address to send it to is on the form.
So, whats the easiest and best thing to do then? Fill in the V5C export portion and send it off, or apply for yet another type of form.0 -
How long has the car been out the country? I carnt imagine its been a long time so I would just fill in the export section and put the date you exported it (assuming its fairly recent) Its no different to you and the car being in the UK and selling it for export but you took a week or so to send the section to DVLA? As long as you notify them thats all they ask for really!0

The DVLA used to accept photos of demolition as proof the car has been "DIY scrapped" someone running it over with a tank was one example. You could ask if they still allow this. Angle grind the chassis into bits.
I made a FOI request to the DVLA recently as I wanted to break my last car up and they had removed the ability to 'self scrap' on the V5.
They had stated that you would need to declare SORN for life if you wanted to break your own vehicle but I was having none of that.. I FOI'd them and got the truth.
You can write to the DVLA and simply tell them that you no longer have the vehicle because you've scrapped it yourself. While they won't destroy the vehicle on their system, they WILL remove you from it's records as the registered keeper which discharges your liability for it. Officially the vehicle will still exist but the DVLA admitted that their numbers are basically screwed due to this.
If you ask me the whole "You'll have to declare sorn every year for life" was just the DVLA trying to have a bit of power over the population completely needlessly.
Straight from the email reply I got back from DVLA:If you are breaking up a vehicle yourself then you must continue to declare Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), until either the parts of the vehicle that is left is taken to an ATF or tell the DVLA by returning the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) with a covering letter explaining you have broken up the vehicle (dismantled) yourself. This will discharge the registered keeper’s responsibility for the vehicle, however, the vehicle record will not reflect scrapped.
If a vehicle has been reflected as broken up by the keeper, then the keeper is no longer shown as the registered keeper, and therefore would not be required to declare SORN and therefore would not be prosecuted for not declaring SORN. Only if you are shown as the registered keeper is vehicle tax and SORN applicable.
Hope that helps..0
