Scrapping A Car Abroad

Looking for Direction / Advice please as i have no clue.

I have an english registered car currently in Germany. The gear box has gone and well itl cost more than the cars worth to replace it.

How do i scrap it over here? I understand DVLA need a scrap certificate but isnt this the part on your V5? Or do you need something from the scrap merchant?

Would i then need to send off the export part or would the scrap part of v5 compensate for this?

Many thanks.

  • Just send off the export slip. Ring up DVLA though a week or two after to check it has been taken off the register as they dont send you a slip to say you are no longer the owner.

Yeah I'd also agree with exporting it. Once its out of the country its none of the DVLAs concern. No foreign scrap yard will have a DVLA link and they don't allow you to declare it as scrapped by yourself so exporting it is your only real option.

You might want to ask a local scrapyard first before doing anything.

I know someone had a lot of difficulty scrapping a UK registered car in Ireland, they wouldn't touch it. I think he had to bring it home in the end.

The DVLA used to accept photos of demolition as proof the car has been "DIY scrapped" someone running it over with a tank was one example. You could ask if they still allow this. Angle grind the chassis into bits.

If the scrap yard in Germany is willing to take it as a UK vehicle or as bits of a vehicle, then surely all you need to do is write to DVLA telling them to remove your name from the register - you no longer have any interest in the vehicle they don't need to know what happened to it...... job done

If you register it in Germany that might cost a bit of money but then you could scrap it as German.

Thanks all, really helped me out with my queries.

Im in Herford area of Germany, i did speak to a scrapyard here and they said theyd take it and destroy it however in return they would only give me a sheet saying what they took out of it before destroying it (petrol, oil) etc.

So il export it, then tell DVLA my actions on scrapping, then hopefully send a letter asking to remove me from the register.

    Appreciate all the help!

yep, notify dvlc it's been exported (get refund on tax too) and then sell it to a German scrap yard.

Might get more complicated if it's on BFG plates
  • I am in Holland with work and brought my UK car with me, however the engine has seized and to get it running, well would be a waste of time as a new engine is costing more then the car.. Also getting it to the UK would cost me dearly as he would need to be towed or placed on a flatbed truck of which all options would only apply to an idiot. So my question as I see this thread is telling people to export, can I do the export thing with DVLA and scrap it here in Holland. I have a scrap place that will take it and provide proof of scrapping..

Any advice would be of great help..

yes, scrap it in Netherlands and just fill in the V5 as Exported and post to DVLA. DVLA are not interested in what happens to it after it has left the UK.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • Hi thanks for the reply.. So it really is as easy as that?
    No comebacks?
Can I reclaim the tax as I still have well over 4 months to run..

    Thanks
