re. Magnet kitchens

Someone has just recommended Magnet to me. What are they like? I have just googled for reviews and they are mixed. I have read lots of kitchen reviews on MSE recently but haven't seen much reference to Magnet. I'd particularly like to hear from you if you have used the Chingford branch (Highams Park) as that is my closest one.

I have just fitted a Magnet kitchen in a customers house. Magnet have three outlets for their kitchens - Magnet (The all singing, all dancing, jazzy showroom concept) which is the Retail arm where they do supply and fitting, Magnet Trade which is, as it sounds, for Trade Customers only (most chippies, builders will have an account there or facilities to buy their products. They are much much cheaper than Magnet Retail and give you the same product. They also have new concept Magnet Express which is a halfway house where retail customers can buy kitchens and they will pair you up with a Trustmark approved fitter.

They are a decent mid range kitchen on a par with Howdens and Benchmarx. Tey have the usual colours and choices of worktops. The kitchens are all rigid so stonger than flat pack and less time involved in installation.

If you buy through Magent Retail you will pay top dollar. You are better off going to a Magnet Trade or Mgnet Express wher prices are far more sensible.

PM Me if you would like some pics of the kitchen I have just done.

    Hi Katejo

My personal quick opinion about Magnet would be that there is better value kitchens out there from some independent kitchen specialists, mainly ones that do mostly German made kitchens.

Also I am not directing this at Magnet, but at kitchen retailers that rely on 50% sales and free this, that and the other. True value for money kitchens I believe come from good design, well made quality products, expertly fitted and good service. Generally this is the domain of quality independents.

Magnet will heavily discount if you haggle hard. Be warned they take NO responsibility if their recommended fitter screws up.

    IMHO, Howdens offer better value.

I have seen horrendous Magnet kitchens. I would rather eat off a packing case for the rest of my life rather than let them in any house of mine.

We have just had two magnet kitcens installed (one for utility) and so far I can't really fault it. Builder made a mistake installing it and all top units had to be raised 20mm to fit floor and then allow the American Fridge to fit under the top box...grr.

Rustic Oak for kitchen and the cheaper Faro for the utility. Got to be looking at 70% off though on the big bits. They won't discount the stuff like kick boards as much and they can soon add up. They are also quite competitive on their appliances now.

I couldn't be bothered playing Howdens trade only nonsense.

What are kick boards? I haven't heard that term.

Integrity and value for money offered by any retailer that offers 50-70% discounts has to be questioned. Why haven;t they offered their best prices first time?

I haven't been impressed by any of the Magnet kitchen designs or installations I have seen. Nor have I been impressed by the product quality. There is much better value to be had for similar money from independents offering a number of German products.

The long narrow boards that lie on the floor, along the base of the units. They hide the carcass legs, and so on. Basically just strips of melamine faced chipboard or similar so quite why they should cost a lot is beyond me.

Leif - when cabinets are discounted 70% plinths have to be marked by 1000% to rip off people.
