If you download a little tool called Speccy - it will also tell you what's on the system.
    Isn't it already on there? #1 ;)
    Move along, nothing to see.

before spending money on ram, remove the bloat - it's never going to run well with all that on there.

put your service tag in here, and the drivers should be there

You need to go to Device manager via Control Panel and see if the Creative Sound card is there. If there are any yellow indicators in Device Manager then it means the drivers are not installed.

If you click on Start, Programmes see if you have Microsoft Update installed. If so, then run it at a custom level as sometimes it will find missing drivers. If MS update is not there then click on Windows update and follow the instructions on high priority updates.

Try these for now and see how you get on.

    I haven't got Microsoft update

I have a thing called device control which at the top says PCI/USB and SPDIF.
Under sounds and audio devices I have a load of hardware, all of which say this device is working properly.

Just gone on add hardware and searched audio media manager and it says drivers for this device are not installed. Where would I find them? I have the soundblaster disk, a cyberlink powere dvd software disk, a user documentation disk ( HTML user documents) drivers ( INF, ICM, AND CAT FILES), SONIC RECORDNOW 7.3 le SOFTWARE, DELL DIMENSION device drivers, diagnostics and utilities, computer documentation.

Just a little intrigued by the problem you have with the audio.

It should be pretty straightforward, unless faulty.

The Dell Dimension 5000 only posts one audio driver for XP with yr service tag. As that it is analog only = SBCD-411.EXE - see website:

    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19

It would do no harm if you downloased this and try and install it

The manual for yr PC may be found here:

The diagram on the first page indicates that you may have a separate sound card as well as sound on board, ie two green speaker sockets,. Is this right? And if so which socket are you plugged into (s/be the bottom one if present)?

Perhaps you'd be kind enough to confirm (apologies if this has already been discussed).
  • No, only one green speaker socket. He's coming back to look at it tomorrow anyway, as it's now decided it doesn't like the internet anymore!

    possibly comodo

if there are any yellow question marks in device manager, you need to install the relevant drivers from the Dell or microsoft website, what's missing, if anything is not clear.

  • UPDATE

He came back yesterday, by which time other things had gone wrong ( I won't bore you!)
Upshot is, he has got the sound working ( we did have two sockets in the end ( one was hidden) but he is using the sound card ones, got rid of comodo and put the windows firewall back on, got rid of the keyboard scrambler ( as the keyboard didn't like it!)
I have ordered some new memory so hopefully when that comes it will make it a lot quicker. I will swop from AVG to Avast, and get rid of soluto, but I want to be polite and keep it for a little while in case he has to come back!

    Thanks for all your help.
