T-Mobile Plan Charges

In the week beginning 12/12/2011 (I believe it was on 15/12/2011) I upgraded to a new phone and plan with T-Mobile. The phone was delivered on 22/12/2011. My bills end on the 20th of each month, so the first bill of the new plan should have been for a month (I have read that sometimes the first bill is higher as it can be for longer than a month so you fit into the billing cycle). However, I am confused by my first (Jan 2012) bill. As it should have been for a month almost exactly, it looks to me like I have been charged twice for the month:
Your monthly plan charges:
600Mins&500Text(18)25 refund for 20/12/11 to 19/1/12 = -£17.02
900Min&500Text&Web(24)40 for 20/12/11 to 19/1/12 = £34.04
900Min&500Text&Web(24)40 = £34.04
Blackberry Email Booster refund for 20/12/11 to 19/1/12 = -£4.25
Unltd Text Booster (FB) for 20/12/11 to 19/1/12 = Free
Monthly charge total £46.81
I don't understand why I've been charged the £34.04 twice? I have then been charged VAT on the £46.81 bringing it to £56.17, when I was expecting to pay £40.85 (£34.04 + 20% VAT).
My last bill of the previous plan (Dec 2011) was for the full usual amount for the month (£25 on a 25 plan) until 19/12/2011.
Does it look to anyone else like I have been overcharged or can anyone explain this?
Thanks!

Just a guess you got a discount of £17.02 because you changed your plan.
Your new plan started with one months payment for past month and one month for coming month, i.e. 34.04
£34.04 x 2 - £17.02 - £4.25 = £46.81 (ex vat)
Next bill should come to £34.04 (ex vat) plus any out of plan charges.0 -
You always pay for one month in advance.
For the previous month they charged you extra 34-17 because you upgraded in Dec from 17 to 34 (excl. VAT).
The second 34.04 is the advance payment for a billing month starting 20/1.0 -
OneADay: Thanks for your reply. But I paid for the previous month's bill as usual on 4/12/11.
grumbler: Thank you! So I won't be charged anything for the current month's bills (due 4/3/12)?0 -
