Cancelling Wedding Meals/Rooms

Thanks for all the replies, the situation with the rooms is terrible we paid in full had a dumb moment should have paid the deposit - they didn't mention it. Found out that was only 20 per room as we cancelled 11 rooms I expected to lose 220 but they only refunded the full price of 7 rooms making themselves some extra there as they had 14 days notice.
What does their cancellation policy say?
In all honesty 14 days isn't much at all. Many people book rooms well in advance of 2 weeks.0 -

OP you need to check the terms of your contract as already said.
I presume this is a private function, there might be minimum numbers in the contract, otherwise they effectively could have sold to a bigger party, which clearly with a few weeks to go they cannot now.
Rooms wise - same thing, check the terms of booking - if there was a deposit and you paid in full, then i would speak to them about that, as it would be unfair to keep more. However if it is the kind of venue that has an exclusiveness to it, and doesnt sell to other parties, there again might be a minimum number of rooms required to hold the venue. We dont know as we dont know the venue.
Weird you paid for the rooms though. Normally for a wedding you would hold an allocation and family would book them up themselves and pay their own deposit0 -
For the food I'd ask for a menu upgrade to the value of the unused meals.
e.g 100 meals at £15 per head; £1500 now only want 75 meals, ask for a £20 menu / extras to the value of £375
For the rooms, I'd ask for upgrades on a similar basis.

It's going to be a cold night on 14 Feb, how about inviting some local homeless people in to use the rooms you've paid for - or suggest to the hotel you might do that and see if they change their mind about a refundYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

At my sisters wedding a couple of people did not show. We gave the food to the photographer and videographer who had been working hard for some hours. There is always someone looking for a free meal.0 -
