Cancelling Wedding Meals/Rooms

Hi can anyone give me advice on cancelling some of the meals at the wedding venue, they say I am not entitled to anything back - it's on the 14th February and is paid in full some on a credit card and some cash. I also cancelled some rooms I had booked and paid for in full, they wouldn't refund me properly for that either although I cancelled with 14 days to go. Thanks

You really need to look at the terms and conditions of your booking.

Its very short notice so I dont think you can expect anything to be honest.

Could you invite some more guests to the wedding to eat the meals.

You said 'they wouldnt refund me properly, does that mean you got something back from the hotel.

See if you can get something from the guests that have cancelled on you re the rooms, tell them that
yu have had to pay for them.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I would say I expect to see those meals served at the empty places, eaten or not, plus guests will be free to move in to the other paid for rooms if they fancy a fresh bed.

While they do have a duty to mitigate their loss, they also have a right to recover their losses - which with 2 weeks to go....well the chances of mitigation are slight and costs are likely to be at least at large amount of the money paid.

You could ask them what measures they have taken to try and mitigate their losses. If the contract states a cancellation fee that is not a genuine pre-estimate of their loss, it can be challenged under the unfair contract terms act.

No one else you want to invite? Anyone who wants to bring a significant other or friend? No point it going to waste if it wont be refunded. Failing that you could ask them to put the excess food into containers and give it to the wedding party or relatives.

Do you have wedding insurance? Not sure if it would cover this since its not the entire venue being cancelled but perhaps worth reading policy documents if you do have it.

Just my own curiosity, if the OP has cancelled the rooms and the hotel re lets them at full cost, what happens then, does the hotel
just pocket the double money or what.

I would agree with McKneff, invite some more people, it won't cost any more than you've already paid and there will be extra wedding presents!

Thats why I would insist I have the keys to the rooms I pay for and I would make sure the bedding was used.
then I would want to see the meals served in to empty places.

I think op would have a very strong case for a full refund on the rooms they re-let.

I'd go as far as to say a case that would be impossible for the supplier to win. They can only claim for actual loss. They cant be compensated twice over.

  • Thanks for all the replies, the situation with the rooms is terrible we paid in full had a dumb moment should have paid the deposit - they didn't mention it. Found out that was only 20 per room as we cancelled 11 rooms I expected to lose 220 but they only refunded the full price of 7 rooms making themselves some extra there as they had 14 days notice.

The only way they would have a case is if they sold the room for cheaper than op paid.

But in essence your right, the use of the word think wasn't really well thought out hehe
